I got stopped by the police for having no insurance in my new - yet I'd called my insurers to amend the policy?
I got stopped by the police because I had no insurance, yet the day I bought the new car I phoned the insurance company to amend the insurance. They are now saying I was not covered and I have been paying for four months for a car I no longer own! I made the call on the garages phone line and a friend and the garage owner where there at the time and heard me ask for the insurance to be changed. They are now trying to say I just asked for a quote. Is there anything I can do? What's the average fine and points for no insurance?

Ask the insurer for the recorded phone call. They are always recorded. Ask them to provide a copy, I would then attend court and use that in my defence. Did you agree to any payment over the phone? Did they confirm you were insured over the phone? Did you not receive correspondence via email or post in the next few days? If you did not, did you not think it odd? All of these things are what are a court would ask. It is your responsibility and no one else's to make sure you are insured. Points and fine are dependent on previous history and circumstance. Generally, the fine is around £300 with 3-6 points. If you know you were insured, defend it in court with the evidence I have advised you obtain above.
