What's the best petrol or hybrid on a budget?

What petrol or hybrid cars would you suggest with high mpg (45/50+) that have a high seating position and easy to get out of. I have a max budget is £2500.

With a limited budget, I'd avoid a hybrid car - you'd struggle to find a good one and you could face high bills when it goes wrong. I'd look for a small petrol car like the Honda Jazz.
