Car manufacturers have identified a gap between new and second-hand models that they call approved used cars, often selling them at higher prices. Here's everything you need to know.

Not all used cars are equal — at least that's what car manufacturers claim with their vast array of schemes selling approved used cars.
Usually operating from showrooms alongside their new car franchises, manufacturers' best used cars are frequently marketed under a separate brand and come with more comprehensive guarantees, warranties, exchange policies.
They have also been more rigorously inspected than most used cars have with many being low. Most are low mileage too. Each manufacturer has its own name for these schemes.
Many opt for Approved Used or a variation on the theme, while others something dreamt up by marketeer's such as Volvo's Selekt range.
Others are organised into manufacturing groups, so while Vauxhall previously had its own Network Q scheme, as it's now part of the Stellantis group, alongside Citroen, Fiat, Peugeot and others, now they all combine under the Spoticar approved used umbrella.
So, are approved used schemes worth the extra outlay for car buyers or are they simply a way to allow those selling them to generate larger profit margins? Read on to find out.
What's different about an approved used car?
All approved used schemes offer a more thorough mechanical inspection than would otherwise be undertaken, but don't be too swayed by the headine-grabbing number of checks. One schene that quotes a 120-point check may simply be counting items covered in a 60-point one in a different manner — it's the scope of what they're checking that really matters.
Every approved used scheme will offer you 12 months warranty, while the better ones provide 24 months. Where the balance of the manufacturer's original warranty is longer, as may be the case for those cars sold new with five- or seven-year warranties, that will remain valid.
Many of the warranties that are offered in approved used schemes are unlimited mileage, but be careful to check the small print with those where their is a cap, because it may refer to the car's total mileage and not the distance you have covered in it.
Breakdown cover is usually provided by the AA or RAC, though some manufacturers operate their own recovery schemes using their dealer network and independent recovery services. In reality, most of these are provided by a firm called Mondial, who white-label their services for manufacturers to brand however they wish.

Is it worth paying the extra for an approved used car?
Approved used cars usually cost more than 'ordinary' used models but not by as much as you may expect. Whether you think the scheme justifies the premium, depends on how much you value the peace of mind that comes with the additional checks, inspections and warranties.
If you're just looking for a decent warranty and have breakdown cover, for example, it may be worth buying a car outside of an approved used scheme and getting an aftermarket warranty from a company such as MotorEasy.
The premium that you pay for opting for an approved used car varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. Sometimes it starts from just a few hundred pounds, but sometimes it's significantly more. As ever, it's important to shop around.

It's not unusual for approved used car schemes to offer five or seven days' free insurance, giving you time to sort out your own policy and shop around when it's convenient to you after the car is yours, rather than rushing around doing it in advance.
Some will also include discounted servicing packages, similar to those offered with brand new cars, which may also include the cost of the annual MoT check for a set number of years.
