You get a lot of car for £14,200 these days. With the Skoda Superb you get 10.4 centimetres more than the VW Passat on which it is based for £650 less money.

That translates into so much rear legroom that back seat passengers may complain of loneliness. And it gives the Superb a very elegant, limo-like look from the rear three-quarters.

The driving experience is partly familiar Passat, and partly not. The car I drove was the £16,000 TDI 130 Comfort, and it went as well as you'd expect a well-seasoned TDI PD 130 to go. 32mph per 1,000 rpm and a wall of torque from 2,000 - 3,000 rpm meant a small prod instantly lifted you from 80 - 100mph. But that extra wheelbase did mean it differed slightly from the Passat in the way it handled. The steering is disconcertingly centre-weighted so you can really feel the pendulum effect of the heavy engine overhanging the front wheels. But once you learn to drive through that, it actually clings on extremely well. You just have to be careful about getting tired on a motorway where a long sweeping bend could see you lurching from lane to lane if you don't brace one of your arms holding the wheel.

I did over 1,000 miles in week in the Superb, got to appreciate its punchy power, and averaged 44.47mpg, which is exactly what the trip computer said I was doing. If you're big and need a big but economical car I can't think of anything better.

And that applies whether it's your own car or on the company.

Okay, okay, where have they cut the corners? (You were bound to ask.) Not inside the cabin for a start. This is very nicely VAG with full climate control on all models and Audi-like Venetian blinds to the vents, two of which feed hot or cold air from the centre console to those far away rear seat passengers. Surprise and delight features abound, with a combined boot and fuel filler keylock in the front door pocket, height and reach adjustable steering wheel, height adjustable front seats with lumbar support, and now not merely a cassette radio but also a CD player in the dashboard. My favourite feature of the lot is inside the boot, where you can pull a couple of tabs to reveal four hooks from which to suspend those supermarket bags that normally spill their contents throughout the luggage locker.

But it was in this area that I did find a fault. My dear old dad and mum had spent a week restoring a pair of fiddleback chairs for me to take home from their place, and the chairs wouldn't fit through the boot opening. No problem, I thought, and went to look for the rear seat backrest release, only to find that there wasn't one. The rear seat is welded to the car. You can poke stuff through a ski-flap, but that's it. So one of the fiddlebacks shared the back seat with its lonely passenger and the other is still in dad and mum's garage.

The Superb is not a small person's car. At 175cms I'm about average, but felt like a midget in this motor. It actually took a long time to get comfortable, not helped by a lack of driver's seat thigh support (there's no tilt). But big people will think it's Nirvana. And two six foot sixers can actually sit behind each other in comfort.

Big Skoda based on stretched Chinese market Passat floorpan and 4,803mm (15 ft 9 in ) long.

Built at the Skoda assembly plant in Kvasiny, Czech Republic. UK prices from £14,200 including air-conditioning, CD player, metallic paint and five three-point seatbelts. VAG engine options start with VW's old 2.0 litre 115bhp petrol, the Passat's 150bhp 1.8T, a TDI PD 130 diesel and a 193bhp 2.8 V6. Line up might also include the Passat's 155bhp V6 TDI and 170bhp V5. Automatic option with some but not all engines. 150bhp 1.8T drives well. Very well received by motoring press and owners.

Nice, thoughtful features such as keylock for boot and petrol filler in driver's door and four bag hooks in the boot to keep supermarket bags upright.

From January 2006 Superb range expanded with addition of 1.9 TDI PD 105bhp in Comfort trim. 2.5 V6 TDI Tiptronic now available in Classic and Comfort trim. Fold down rear seats fitted to some models from 2005 model year.

From July 2006 updated for the 2007 model year. New radiator grille with, more 3-dimensional design in line with the new face of koda. Turn indicators integrated into the wing mirrors and front indicators have been combined with headlamps. Tail lights are C-shaped. Four new colours: Cappuccino Beige, Olive Green, Anthracite Grey and, from November 2006, Satin Grey. New dashboard on all trim levels. Instruments clusters are backlit with white light. Classic, Comfort and Elegance continue extended with Laurin & Klement. L&K includes 17” alloy wheels, dual exhaust, special badging, leather seats, wood trim and sleek metal-finished frames on ventilation outlets and door handles.

Three petrol and three diesel engines, with performance levels ranging from the 115 bhp 2.0 litre to the 2.8 V6 with 193 bhp in the petrol engines and from 105 bhp in the 1.9 TDI to 160 bhp in the 2.5 V6 TDI in the turbo diesel engines.

What to watch out for

01-01-0001:

Popular among taxi drivers, particularly the 1.9 diesel, so check for signs of this and beware of clocked back starship mileages.

If the drains for the ventilation plenum chamber get blocked with leaves water will have nowhere to go except into the car where it can cause electrical and electronic problems. Vital to check this area regularly. Pollen filter seal and pollen filter waterproof cover may also fail, allowing raniwater into the car even if the sucttle drains are clear.

Petrol engines can hydraulic for an extraordinary reason: water built up in the ventilation plenum chamber due to failure to clear the drains can perforate the seam of the two halves of the brake servo, rust the inside and make the brake pedal hard. That water can then get sucked into the engine if the servo diaphragm becomes perforated.

All 1.8 20V turbos built from around August 2001 to October 2002 can suffer from failure of one or more of the four ignition coils, which lead to a dispute between VAG and a supplier and a severe shortage of coils from November 2002 to January 2003.

On 2.0 litre PD diesel engine the oil stainer in the sump is prone to getting clogged with sludge, elading to premature oil pump failure and consequent engine failure. These engines need proper oil changes at least every 10k miles with oil flush added and the old oil drained from the sump plug, not siphoned out.

Early 2.0 TDIs PD 140s and PD 170s with balancer shafts have a chain drive to the oil pump and the chain drive can eventually snap. Later cars have a hexagonal shaft positive drive to the oil pump that is also a problem. Failed oil pump drives totally wreck the engines and if the car has not been 100% Audi maintained, Audi will not pay.

The oil pump is driven from a balancer shaft via a short hexagonal shaft. The peaks of this hexagonal shaft locate in six corresponding but minute grooves machined within the otherwise circular-bored oil pump drive shaft. Thus, the oil pump drive relies entirely on an interference fit of little more than 0.010" along the peaks of the hexagonal shaft. After about 50,000 miles, the shaft can round off, resulting in a totally destroyed engine and turbo, plus a bill of up to £9,000.

If the danger is known and the oil pump is removed by the garage in good time, a new replacement pump will cost over £500, plus the labour etc to remove and refit it. However, it is also possible to save the old pump and modify the drive at a fraction of the cost of a new one. Many local machine shops already have numbers of these pumps in for such rectification, the drive shaft of each having been on the point of rounding off.

The non balancer shaft BKD, AZV and BMN 2.0 engines (which found their way into the 2.0 PD Octavia, A3, Golf, and various SEATs) used a chain driven oil pump very similar, but not identical, to the old 1.9 130hp PD engine. This never seems to give any problems. It's the balancer shafts that cause the problems on the 'posher' VAG 2.0 PD diesels eg Passat, A4, Superb.

This 2.0 PD differs from the 1.9 in having twin Lanchester balancing shafts which contra-rotate at 2x crank speed. The first engines used a chain drive which was a complete disaster and the later engines a gear drive. All 2.0 PD got the geared drive towards the end of 2005.

The problem with the 2.0 PD engine is the drive from the slave balancer shaft to the oil pump, which is a piece of 6 AF hex bar which has inadequate engagement depth with the grooves in the slave shaft. It's the torsional oscillations caused by the balance shafts which destroy the oil pump coupling (the 6mm AF bit of hex) and the chain drive to the balancer shafts before the gear driven systems came out, though these still give problems with the hex key rounding.

The problem is with lack of concentricity of the drive socket into which the drive rod/hex fits. Chacking shows that all the drive sockets in the failed units were off centre by at least 0.1mm. All the replacement balancer units were dead centre and have not led to a repeat failure. Some replacement balancer units have now done 100k+ miles.

You will get this problem at some point if you have a 2.0TDi WITH balancer shafts. If your 2.0TDi does NOT have balancer shafts, you will be ok. If you fit the lastest balancer shaft/ pump assembley from VAG it will more than likely cure the problem for life as they have made the hex longer and centered it all properley.

CR engines are safe. Anything before that..Audi/VAG wont say exactley when they started to fit the units that actualy work properly.

Think washing machine -> unbalanced load -> keep doing it = new machine. The problem is with lack of concentricity of the drive socket into which the drive rod/hex fits. The drive socket is can be off centre by at least 0.1mm. In engineering terms, this is a massive defect. All the drive sockets in the failed units were off centre, but all the replacement balancer units were dead centre and have not led to a repeat failure. Some replacement balancer units have now done 100k+ miles according to some garages. You will get this problem at some point if you have a 2.0TDi WITH balancer shafts. If your 2.0TDi does NOT have balancer shafts, you will be ok.
