Ultimate safety with great looks and feel good factor.

Got this car on a bargain lease deal and have not been disappointed! Here’s the scoop:-

Pros:
Looks fantastic from all angles, it exudes sophistication and class, there are so few out there that it stands out amongst the usual BMWs and Audi prestige cars.

The interior is pure luxury with a lot of room, leather throughout, lovely TFT dashboard dials that feel like you’re in a fighter cockpit!

On the motorway it wafts along majestically, and to my great delight I don’t seem to suffer tailgaters the same, such is it’s presence on the road..

The actual build quality is excellent too with tactile materials, and it really does feel like a premium car. Ironically there is a small fabric Swedish flag stitched into the piping of the leather seats to remind you of it’s provenance, though I’m reliably informed that the S90 cars are built in China! I’m not complaining though as my iPhone was built there and that too was beautifully executed..

Cons:
This car is BIG so takes a keen eye to park it up carefully (not a problem if you have self-parking option or the perimeter camera facility).

The automatic gearbox can feel a bit jerky when accelerating from low gear so needs a gentle feathering of gas pedal to go smoothly, which is easily mastered.

The stop/start system can irritate, this is the first car I’ve had with this feature; sometimes this car switches the engine off a split second before the car comes to a halt, then when the car does stop, it’s engine switches back on, then it thinks “oh, we have stopped after all” so then switches off again! Very strange indeed, I was hoping a recent service and software update would have solved it but to no avail. It doesn’t happen all the time so I have learned to live with this anomaly. My dealer hadn’t come across it apparently, so it may just be my car (Petrol version) or I’m just not used to how stop/start technology works.

Although the handling feels taught and responsive, the ride can feel a bit unsettling on urban roads, this improves however as you pick up the pace.

Summary:
These cars make a really good second hand buy when you consider that the base model was £37k when new. They are quite exclusive and draw admiring glances too. Even the young kid on the counter at my local petrol station commented on how nice it looked so maybe Volvo are finally shedding it’s older driver image?

I do get ‘Made in China’ jibes from my colleagues now and again when they want to wind me up but do you know what, I really don’t care because I love driving it, and in the knowledge too that it’s probably one of the safest cars on the road today.

Driving long distances along A roads and motorways is a joy in this vehicle. This is the best new car I’ve owned, and I’ve had several over the years from different manufacturers..
