Mazda 5 (2010 - 2015)
1.6D Sport 5dr People Carrier
Versatile and comfortable, if not as reliable as hoped
I've had this car now for over 3 years and over 40k miles. This is a follow-on to my 2 December 2013 review (http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/owner-reviews/mazda/5-2010/?review=2608).
The car is now up to 60k miles, and has had a couple of problems. One was a sudden loss of power when warm. This occurred after a fill-up, and might have been contaminated fuel. Changing the fuel filter and discarding £60 of fuel fixed it. The rear pads and disks have been coming up on the past couple of services: a year ago they were 85% worn, and last week they were 80%. I guess they don't get much use in general use.
I had the issue with the handbrake failing to work occasionally, which was eventually fixed under warranty. A few weeks later, the hydraulic fluid level light came on, and the rear brake pipe union was leaking on the same wheel. It's now starting to happen again 3 years later, so I hope I can avoid the £500+ repair cost.
The most recent service has also noted that one of the rear dampers will need replacing soon, as well as one of the front ball joints, at a cost of £500.
We bought this hoping for practicality and Japanese reliability. We only got 1 out of 2
