Hyundai i30 Tourer (2012 - 2017)
Blue Active 1.6 diesel 110bhp
Excellent all rounder
I've only had the car a couple of weeks so early days, but so far I'm pleased with it. I read every review possible, and not all were positive - the car's steering, handling and ride were criticised. Also some concerns about visibility.
Well compared to my previous car a Kia Proceed, which is a cousin of the i30s, the handling is fine, the ride very good and the steering just right for a car of this size. There ae blindspots, but I haven't seen a car in the last 10 years that doesn't have blindspots. The economy thus far has been excellent - 55mpg for a town/rural mix - and the stop/go system has worked very well.
The seat is comfortable, I'm tall so this can often be an issue. The interior layout is sensible, equipment levels are very good, and the finish is as good as any major manufacturer. The interior space is excellent, it has already been lugging ladders and other stuff around. The engine lacks power at low revs, so I try to get to the higher gears as quickly as I can - from 4th upwards the power delivery is fine (for a 1.6) though it isn't going to win any races and overtaking takes planning!
I haven't been to a dealer yet, but the 5 year warranty and RAC cover are a bonus - as is the £20 a year road tax. Overall, this car ticks a lot of boxes - practical, economical, nicely designed and easy to drive. Compared to Golfs that I've owned there doesn't seem to be any difference in quality - and it won't be difficult to beat VW on reliaiblity, especially on the electrical front!
