Chevrolet Orlando (2011 - 2015)
2.0 LTZ VCDi
It is practical, comfortable on long journeys, and great value.
I have run this car for 2 years, and for the first 7 months I ran it alongside a 2009 Mercedes 220 CDi CLK. It makes an interesting comparison. We bought the Orlando because the CLK with only four seats and two doors was not practical for the grandchildren. The Orlando is slightly more powerful but slightly heavier so you need a stopwatch to judge the performance( both cars are automatic). The Orlando has less road noise and engine noise, and the wind noise is about the same. Both cars are very comfortable and easy to drive. The Mercedes has better handling - but only just! The Orlando is surprisingly good with little body roll at sensible speeds, and I like the high driving position,(I have always had my driver's seats at the highest position). The Mercedes is slightly more economical with 49mpg against 47mpg on the same long run, but costs much more to insure. The Orlando is particularly good on the motorway where 2000rpm equates to 80mph.
The automatic gearboxes are both excellent with imperceptible changes and good Tiptronic control; the Orlando has the edge with 6 speeds. I find the Orlando easier to get into both front and rear. The only area where the Mercedes wins hands down is prestige!
