Overall reliability

Great handling and performance with hatchback practicality

I previously had a 320d tourer which I bought for it's good all round performance and carrying capacity but my 420d Grand Coupe is better in every aspect. The performance from the 2 litre 190 HP engine is more than adequate for 95% of my driving and speccing the car with 8 speed sports auto gearbox and adaptive suspension makes it a superb experience for short and long journeys as well as the occasional fast country road.. The hatchback flexibility gives a similar load capacity to the tourer but the car seems to be more planted on the road and feedback is more like a sports saloon yet amazingly it still averages 44.5 mpg overall. Reliability (admittedly after only10K) is well up to the usual BMW standards with no oil consumption and there aren't many diesel engines with this power that don't need to have Ad Blu treatment!
Just returned from a trip to France, three up and two suitcases and still found room for 138 bottles of wine, 50 bottles of beer and two supermarket shops and found that the car still performed well without any serious change to it's handling - the mark of a Grand Coupe?
Overall I am thoroughly enjoying this car and if I had to change it tomorrow it would be for the same model or possibly the 425d which has a slightly more tweaked 2 litre engine.
