The new Ford Transit E-Courier compact van is Ford's upcoming pure EV entry-level commercial vehicle that’s due to enter production later in 2024. An electric sister van to petrol and diesel versions of the all-new Ford Transit Courier set to launch in summer 2023, it is a significant new CV from Britain’s favourite van brand.
The new Ford Transit E-Courier is a key part of the Ford Pro van division’s plan to rapidly electrify its line-up. It is uncompromised by its electric transformation either, with 26% more load space than the outgoing Ford Transit Courier. It will be cheaper to run than a diesel alternative too, with 35% lower servicing costs.
New Ford E-Transit Courier owners can expect an EV range of around 200 miles, and standard rapid charging will add over 50 miles of range in 10 minutes. This will ensure it is a competitive challenger to rival electric vans such as the Renault Kangoo E-Tech, the practical Vauxhall Combo Electric and the Citroen e-Berlingo.
2024 Ford E-Transit Courier prices and release date
The new Ford Transit E-Courier will begin production later in 2024. It will be built at Ford’s factory in Romania, which also builds Britain’s best-selling van, the Ford Transit Custom, and Ford E-Transit. Petrol and diesel versions of the regular new Ford Transit Custom arrive first, and are due to be released in summer 2023.
Prices for the new Ford Transit E-Courier have not yet been revealed. It is likely they will start from under £30,000 (ex VAT). They may be made even more competitive if the government £2500 plug-in van grant remains. For comparison, prices for the petrol-powered new Ford Transit Courier are likely to start from around £20,000 (ex VAT).
2024 Ford E-Transit Courier styling, interior and technology
The new Ford Transit E-Courier is a surprisingly modern and distinctive-looking van. It is set apart by a high-tech front end, complete with moody-looking LED headlights and a central LED light bar. The grille is closed, to aid aero efficiency, and higher-spec models have a distinctive lozenge pattern.
The boldness of the new Ford Transit E-Courier’s front end certainly gives it an assertive appearance on the road. This is in line with the firm’s desire to bring across its American roots in future designs - and will ensure the 2024 Ford Transit E-Courier stands out from its rivals.
The new Ford Transit E-Courier’s black lower panels give it a cool crossover-style appearance, and Ford is likely to offer attractive metallic paint options as well as the usual white and grey. These include metallic Fantastic Red and Bursting Green. At the rear, structural LED lights are concealed beneath clear plastic covers.
Inside, the new Ford Transit E-Courier has a core dashboard design related to the latest top-selling Ford Puma. Ford’s created a ‘squircle’ steering wheel, which it says improves driver legroom and visibility, while a column-mounted gearshifter and electronic parking brake improve roominess.
The Ford Transit E-Custom has two digital displays, creating a ‘digiboard’ instrument panel. There’s a 12.0-inch driver cluster and 12.0-inch centre touchscreen running the latest Ford SYNC4 tech. It has wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto both as standard, and is available with subscription-based Connected Navigation which Ford says improves productivity and reduces driver workload.
The new Ford Transit E-Custom has a unique ‘Office Pack’ which includes a flat, foldaway work surface and LED cabin lighting that makes using a laptop, filling in paperwork or eating a lunchtime burger easier. There’s a built in modem too, for over-the-air updates and remote diagnostics without having to visit a dealer.
Features in the new Ford Transit E-Custom that will keep drivers safe include a comprehensive set of advanced driver assistance tech as standard. Also available are adaptive cruise control with lane centring and stop and go, a blind spot information system with cross traffic alert, and even reverse brake assist that warns of people or other cars when backing up - invaluable, given the restricted rear visibility of a van.
The new Ford E-Transit Custom has a really roomy load bay, which is exactly the same size as petrol and diesel versions.
It offers a huge 1220mm width between the wheelarches - and it is now capable of carrying two Euro pallets for the first time. Total cargo volume of 2.9 m3 is 26% more than the previous model - and a clever load-through bulkhead feature allows long items such as planks measuring more than 2.6 metres long to be carried. The new Ford Transit E-Custom has a 700kg payload, and maximum towing weight of 750kg.
As for security, the new Ford E-Transit Custom will have a ready-made range of TVL-designed factory-fit lock packs. These will include secondary hook locks to mitigate against ‘peel and steal’ attacks. The Ford Pro software has a Fleet Start Inhibit feature, so fleet managers can remotely disable every new Ford E-Transit Custom on their fleet to prevent theft or unauthorised use outside work hours.
2024 Ford E-Transit Courier engines, performance and fuel economy
The new 2024 Ford E-Transit Custom will have a pure electric drivetrain and run alongside petrol and diesel versions of the new 2023 Ford Transit Custom.
The new Ford Transit Custom’s EV motor will deliver 136PS, making it more powerful than even the punchiest turbo petrol model, and its automatic transmission will deliver ‘one-pedal’ driving. This is where regenerative braking can be used to slow the car by easing off the accelerator, rather than the driver pressing the brake pedal. The new Ford Transit E-Custom will have a 90mph top speed.
Battery and range details for the new Ford Transit E-Custom have not yet been revealed. However, to be competitive with its rivals, it is almost certain to offer a range of over 200 miles. Ford says 100kW DC rapid charging capability will be included, which will allow 54 miles of range to be added in 10 minutes. It will charge from 10-80% in less than 35 minutes.
Ford expects customers will mainly charge at home overnight. Ford Pro Charging is targeting an overnight charge in less than 6 hours, using an 11kW AC unit. And charging can be scheduled through the infotainment system to take advantage of cheaper overnight electricity.
The new Ford Transit E-Custom will come with one year’s complimentary access to the BlueOval Charge Network. By the time of the new Ford Transit E-Custom’s 2025 launch, the network will include more than 500,000 public chargers.
