Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate - Instrument panel gone blank - Wynyard

I have a Mercedes E Class estate reg 2009, [old shape] and yesterday the instrument panel went blank. The car starts and the indicators and lights work but there is no speedo, rev counter etc, which are all on the instrument panel.

I got this advice from anther page on this site, can anyone confirm it is safe and worthwhile attempting?

"Disconnect the earth(negative/minus sign)lead only and run a jump lead
> from the detached earth lead to the positve/plus terminal of the battery
> and leave it attached for 5 mins. Under no circumstances allow the
> detached earth lead to touch the vacant earth terminal of the battery"

I have checked the fuses and to the best of my limited knowledge they look OK.

Does anyonw have any other advice?

You need two special tools to remove the binacle cheap on ebay you then need to test the leads to see if the have voltage on the appropiate pins .If you need a new binacle then there are umpteen versions so make sure you get the right one. These need putting on the MB computer to match to the cars ecu not a cheap exercise lets hope its just a fuse or something simple like a loose plug.
