Volkswagen Polo - Creak from wheel arch/ suspension - Paul87

Afternoon

I have a 62 Reg Polo TDI , only 7k on the clock, I have noticed a creak/sqeak from the passenger side front suspension/ wheel arch. Only really makes the noise when goigng over speed bumps and when you push the wing of the car down (how you would normally test the shocks). I havent hit any pot holes or kerbs.

I phoned the dealer and they sounded like I was troubling them with a small issue . They recommended I keep driving on it and if it doesnt stop book it in.

I was wondering what your thoughts on the squeak ?

Also I would appreciate some advice on dealers.

I have two VW dealers in my area, one is obviously brought my car from and have used reguarly, but I am getting more annoyed with their poor aftersales/ servicing this is not the first instance where they dont really seem bothered a previous car had an onging issue (worn AC compressor bearings) which they refused to acknowlege as it was £900 repair and would cost them too much. I would have to wait till effectly the breaings siezed!! I have had enough of them.

Would it be possible to send my car to the other VW dealer to be looked at. May seem like a silly question but do dealers get a***y when I take a car I havent brought from them to them?

You have received poor service from your local dealer, so you reward them by buying another new car from them???

In answer to your original question, the noise may be nothing to worry about, but you don't buy a new car to put up with unidentified noises. Take the car along to the other dealer and ask them to take a look. I'd say they have a potential new customer if they play their cards right.

Thanks for the help I will give the other dealer a call tomorrow. I hadn't intended to buy a car from them again, I was looking elsewhere (and they knew it) so they gave me a very good offer.

Finger crossed

Poor VAG main dealer service really winds me up, the UK dealer network is very poor compared to the one in Germany. As a VAG specialist I have to work b***** had to attract and keep my customers but the main dealer has customers handed to them on a plate and then they treat people with contempt, maddening! I don’t know of a common issue on the 6R that can cause this issue but on the previous 9N3 I would have said possibly the anti-roll bar drop link or wishbone rear bush but the late 9N3 and the 6R reverted to the Golf 4 rear wishbone bush design instead of the Golf 5 design and these don’t seem to make a noise early in life.

not sure if this will hep but I have the same issue with a 2012 Golf Plus which I believe is based on the MKV platform so may be differet to your Polo. The creaking occurs over what I term long speed cushions - the buses have to get over them so they have a long ramp up over about a metre. These abound where I live and I have to go over at least 3 within 300 yards of my house in any direction! It seems worse before the car has warmed up. Over normal surfaces the ride is very comfortable Dealers have been friendly and helpful and last time they took off the front control arms and found (as I supected) that the rear bushes creaked when moved. They replaced them and thought that woud be fixed but unfortunately it made no difference, It may be that the type of rubber used by VW in the bushes is noisy when used in certain ways eg when suspesnion is fully deflected when cold. I hope to make some progress with this when the car goes in for service shortly but at present both the dealer and myself are scratching our heads. If you search the internet there is a fair bit of annecdotal suggestion that squeaking/creaking may be an issue but I have not read of any definitive solution. Maybe we need to get Land Rovers such is the state of what we have to drive on! Good luck!

It sounds very much like an anti roll bar "D" bush creak. Where the bar connects to the front cross member there are D shaped isolation bushes clamped in place and can make noises as the bar twists in them.

If the car was older and out of warranty, I'd say lubricating them with a silicon rubber grease would cure it, but seeing as it's under warranty, get the dealer to replace them.
