The title just about says it all.

Young people are so ripped off, they just stop insuring their cars

No they're not being ripped off.
Younger drivers are paying huge premiums because they are a huge risk .

The insurance industry is extremely competitive and profit margins are small .

The premiums that ALL drivers pay ,represent the claims history of thier particular demographic .Ie age , post code etc .

You only have to look at the BD postcode where I live to see what a problem certain areas and ages can represent for insurance companies . I'm 63 ,I've not made a claim in twenty years ,but my insurance has gone from £625 to £1000 in 5 years .

Cash for crash has been a problem locally for ten years or more .Hence the reluctance of some insurance companies to even quote for BD post codes .

Stick with it! When you are 73, living in a NG postcode and driving a group 3 car you wil be paying £170 full comp with cover for driving anywhere in the EU!

Insuring a car as a 17 year old has never been cheap but it is proportionately more today than it was when I started driving in the early 70's according to the youngters at work.

But when I was a lad the roads had much less traffic and cars were much slower. Its only 40's years ago I know but an MGB was considered a fast car at the time and would have been impossible for a 17 year old to insure, it would do about 105 mph and 0-60 in 13 seconds. A 1200 Corsa will that today.

You have the "Knock for Knock" agreements that existed until about 20 years ago for keeping young drivers prices down and the introduction of no win no fee about the same time for putting the prices up further.

The current low returns on investments don't help

I wish ! Forgot to mention that's the cost of trade insurance, any car with demo cover ,not private car insurance .

The price is still a pain , when you consider how good my claims record is .

Live in NG post code. 3 cars in house, one insurance group 21 £250, one insurance group 17 £180 and one in a high group (no idea what) but limited mileage £200.

All SDP with protected max. no claims and 15,000 miles PA (except the 3,000 miles PA limited one) and both drivers have clean record. Have one breakdown policy to cover the lot £60 and one Legal policy to cover the lot £20.

So all told insurance bill is £710 if my maths is right. Happy with that when I paid over £700 for an old Golf GTI in 1992 with full NCB and a clean record.
