Be warned ! Do not buy a mobile from tesco 02 store

If you buy a mobile phone from an 02 shop in a tesco store you are not entitled to the same good return policies that you are if you buy from 02 shop !

Somehow my youngest daughter purchased two phones on a 2 year deal registered to our home address !

so tesco's dont check with the home owner ! didnt question that with her earning apprentiship money she couldnt afford it !

I returned the next day only to be told that Tesco cannot refund mobile phone contracts and do not allow a 7 or 14 day cooling off period , although 02 advised us if we had bought from an 02 shop not in a tesco store we could of returned the phones no problem !

We are now left with an £1800 bill to finnish the contracts now or £2750 if we let them run.

Where on earth are tesco's policies ? surley Tesco should have some moral obligations to ask the correct questions first ?

Safer to buy from 02 shop for sure & as for tesco customer service we have made so may calls & visits and we are just blanked or fobbed of with excuses every visit. When the chips are down forget tesco.

Er...yes, I can kind of see your point.

BUT I would be having a sharp word with my daughter about acting responsibly if it was me. Presumably she is over 18 to sign a contract. Legally she is an adult and should start behaving like one.

Unfortunatley she has a learning disability which doesn't help the situation which would of been very obvious when she signed the contract as it takes her several mins to print her name ! My concern is why the discrepencey between 002 and Tesco, when another daughter who is over 20 and has full time job bought 1 mobile phone in an 02 shop she was asked to bring her parents back before she could sign the agreement as the house didn't belong to her ! Stearn words have been had and 3 years of her savings will be blown.

I think that a polite letter to Tesco HO (perhaps even their CEO, Philip Clarke), explaining your daughter's learning difficulties, might induce them to make an exception.

It could well come under mis-selling a product.
Details here : How to complain if you're mis-sold a mobile contract

It's worth seeking advice from Trading Standards.
It would also be the type of case BBC Radio 4 "Money Box" would like to hear about, Paul Lewis.

Also as Avant says.

What difference does it make that your daughter doesn't own your house? O2/Tesco will have run a credit check and part of the info. will be time at current address. You don't have to own a house to enter into a phone contract, if you did, half the population wouldn't have one.

I sympathise, but the salesperson did their job and moved two sales closer to their weekly target/bonus. O2 and Tesco didn't get where they are today by being nice.

Thank you avant & Mike

I wrote to the CEO, expressing serious concerns with procedure & a duty of care towards their clients and when it was investigated the matter has been dealt with in a most proffessional way & a very satisfactory result has been achieved so actually well done tesco. Me feels there will be some additional staff training to come.

Common sense obviously prevaled and it was realised that someone had been over zelous.

I'm glad you have got this sorted out.

When I made my comment, which might have seemed harsh, I didn't know your daughter has a learning disability, as you hadn't mentioned that.

Best wishes to you and her.
