I used them recently as the price quoted was cheaper than toyota and they would collect/return the car. BUT I had to pay £32.50 for headlight aim adjust and £45 for a handbrake adjustment on top of the service/mot cost which made a total bill of £328.60.

won't be using them again.

Guess you have learned that these places offer cheap prices for a reason.

any car - servicingstop.co.uk - 72 dudes

I've had a trawl through the website and found a few interesting things

  • They're not cheap - an oil and filter change plus the ubiquitous "service checks" costs £130 for my MX5, Special oil costs extra. They call this an interim service.
  • A full service does not include spark plugs, they cost extra.
  • They are a booking agent only. Your car will be dealt with by a local independent garage. You don't know which one until they call you back after booking.
  • Their "upto 60%" off dealer service prices is based on a cross section of like for like services, based seemingly on the most expensive dealer in the area (who would take a W reg RAV4 to Cooper BMW or a Volvo C70 to a Honda dealer?? - check the 'click here' link underneath the price saving claim)
  • That word "upto" means that in some cases, the servicingstop price was the same as a main dealer or only a few pounds different.

The booking agent makes their healthy profit by providing customers to local garages, who no doubt offer the same service at a much reduced Labour rate if you go direct. I suspect also that garages are encouraged to upsell and 'add value' to the service by charging for everything not included in the schedule, hence the £45 for handbrake adjustment.

But hey, isn't this the entrepreneurial spirit our government wants the private sector to exhibit?

No thanks, I'll stick with a trusted independent.

It's cheaper to use expensive franchised dealers!

Just checked their prices for a 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe - £130 for the 6-month/5,000 mile service plus £205 for the 12-month/10,000 mile service, a total of £235 - compared to £230 for the 12-month/20,000 mile service at a HyundaI dealer which keeps the warranty intact, uses the correct long-life oil, and provides a courtesy car.

Hi Everyone!

My name is Craig from Servicing Stop and just wondered if I could put some comments to the matters raised in this thread.

Gentle Giant - I am sorry to hear that our costs appear to have not worked out cheaper than a Main Dealer, we do compare ourselves against Main Dealers and it is disappointing to hear this, we do put in place in our terms and conditions price guarantees therefore could you contact me so that I can look into this further, I will place my email address below;

craig@servicingstop.co.uk

72 Dudes - in essence we are a broker service and the reason to use us should be the costs that our volumes can negotiate with the Garage alongside our dedicated Service Advisors who deal directly with you on the day alongside our Customer Services Team - and we are always looking at improving this.

Whilst any business requires profit to survive we ensure that valid recommendations are only made as respectfully it is our reputation and your car and this is supported by our Audit Team.

RT - As discussed above we do have price guarantees as detailed in our terms and conditions and I do appreciate the quote you have discussed, monitoring this and ensuring our costs are valid is really important to Servicing Stop, may I ask where you received the quote?

Craig

I took your figures directly from your website, having used my registration number to determine the exact vehicle. The franchised dealer figures are the amount I paid within the last 12 months for their standard service.

Your quoted figure was marginally higher than my local franchised dealer but would no doubt increase substantially if 7 litres of the recommended 5W-30 ACEA-C3 fully synthetic oil is included twice a year - needed to avoid wrecking the DPF and to retain the validity of the 5-year warranty.

any car - servicingstop.co.uk - skidpan

Had a look at their website for a price for our Kia Ceed, very interesting.

The Kia service interval on our MY11 CRDi is 12 months or 20,000 miles, Servicing Stop services are an interim at 6 months or 5,000 miles and 12 months or 10,000 miles, total for a year £365. This does not include the C3 spec oil that essential to keep the DPF healthy, that is extra but it does not say how much.

Lets ignore the 6 month service, not had a car serviced every 6 months since an early 80's Escort. The 10,000 mile, 12 month service is £205 plus the special oil, lts assume £30 extra bringing the total to £235.

Just recently had the 2 year service done to our Ceed which is the most expensive one, including the C3 oil and a brake fluid change the cost was £255, not much more than the Servicing Stop price without the brake fluid assuming my £30 extra for the C3 is correct.

But having looked through the tick sheet on the website its bears no relationship to the Kia schedule which could cause problems should warranty work be required and the manufacturer discover the service work was not correct. They do not state that they use OEM parts which are specified as being required in the service book should you not use a Kia dealer

But there is a final nail in the coffin for Servicing Stop. Kia require that the paint and body be inspected every 12 months to keep the 5 year paint and 12 year body warranties intact. The £255 we paid included those checks but if you took the car to a Kia dealer for the checks after having it serviced elsewhere its a chargeable item, No fixed cost but garages charge between 30 minutes and an hours labour for the stamp. Been told that our local dealer charges £50 for this, add that to the £235 and its £285.

So basically if I used Servicing Stop I would get a service that does not match the manufacturers schedule, pay extra for the correct oil, probably not get OEM parts, have to pay a Kia dealer to carry out the paint and body checks and at the end of all that pay a higher priceand probably have probelms later getting any necessary warranty work done.

One other thing, when any of our recent cars have been into the main dealer for services they always check if any campaign items or ECU updates need carrying out, wen they have been done inthe past its always been FOC. Servicing Stop cannot do this and since one of the updates was to prevent early turbo gfailure it could have been a very costly should a problem have occurred.

I see it's some time since a review of this company. I used them in Feb' 2015 for an MOT and interim service. A staff member rang to say my car need £480 worth of repairs to pass. I refused to beleive this and had to argue to get my car returned and pay £114. When it arrived with the refused MOT only a ball joint was given as the reason for failing. I had to take my car to Halfords and pay for a new MOT and the new ball joint cost which cost with fitting £59. I dealt with 'Craig' from servicing stop even sending him copies. But all he did was prevaricate and delay eventually trying to shift the blame to the garage. I have reported the company to VOSA. I strongly advise anyone thinking of using this company not to do so.

Well done for challenging and not letting them get away with it!

Kind of reinforces the view I posted above in December 2012.

My experience of Servicing Stop left me writing to trading standards to recommend them for investigation. My complaint to their Directors has not been answered. It starts well with a cheap quote for a service and MOT and every review they have on their website is 5 stars. If something looks too good to be true it often is. Some problems were identified and then you find out about their hidden price uplift system (nothing in their terms and conditions).

A lady phoned up from SS and did the hard sell to me. She refused for my car to be returned unless I paid up. She was rude, aggressive and tried to bully me into accepting her inflated quote. She excluded VAT from the quoted price for elements and then added it back onto the bill even when she was aware I was not a business. She refused for me to speak to a manager.

I found independents who would do the work for half the price, but instead had the work done at the manufacturer approved garage (which are rarely the cheapest) for considerably less than that proposed by Serving Stop.

No invoice has been received, despite requesting.

I would like Servicing Stop to be completely open and honest about their mark up percentage on extra work and not put customers under pressure to make a sell.

I have just had a very similar experience in all respects. basically they tried to charge me £250 for a full service which they quoted as being £113. After long and protracted discussions with not so friendly staff I ended up paying £220 which was the same price as main dealer however, my bodywork inpection was not done as it would have been at Hyundai.

Feeling very "ripped off Britain"

Can I explain how Servicing Stop Works: They contract with a number of independent garages. When you book with Ser.Stop they contact a local garage to you to collect and repair/mot your car

Servicing stop will pay the garage less than you pay them, thats how they make their Money. They will also upsell you for better oil, Engine flush etc.

In my opinion you are better just going to your local garage and cutting out the middle man.

This service isn't something i'd, nor probably many of our posters, would need or use, but there are thousands of motorists out there who haven't the foggiest idea whats involved in servicing nor where they should go, hence the queries and disasters we read about here and the dozens HJ gets in his mailbag.

If SS use a garage regularly then there is probably some peace of mind for the customer when someone who knows a bit about the game has deemed the garage suitable to be used...whether it's the case or not it might give the feeling that there's someone like a big brother keeping an eye out for you.

Out of interest; they say warranties are not affected. Given that for a warranty to remain in place the work must be carried out using manufacturers' parts and fluid. As they use a variety of independant garages, how do we know that the parts and fluids are to specification?

Help Servicestop.co.uk are holding my Car Hostage !

I recently booked a car service and MOT online using servicestop.co.uk, during the process they quite clearly in my view took details of my car and emailed me these back to confirm but offered me a full service and MOT for £150, their web site states clearly that the service will be carried out "According to the manufacturers schedule". They also state "we ensure that the car service we do for you is done according to the manufacturer service schedule, using approved genuine car parts of OE (Original Equipment) standard, making sure your warranty is protected at all times." I would also like to note that my car had been serviced to manufacturer standard by Arnold Clarke under a service plan up until this service and I had a quote from them of £319 for two years service and MOT, I had never had any problem or been charged extra for these services.

Well everything went smoothly my car was collected as agreed by a local company, until later that day I was called by service stop representative, who requested authorisation and agreement to pay for special oil for my car and break fluid change and push. The oil alone came to £63.80, the break fluid change. Obviously by then the car's service had mainly been carried out and so when I requested that my car was returned unserviced and MOT'd they refused.

Have agreed to pay full cost of service minus cost of standard oil replacement to no responce so far, other than you will have to pay the full cost and get car returned without oil changed, otherwise we will not release the car. Will see what happens when I hang out in the local service place, who I feel quite sorry for but then I do need my car for work at the weekend.

Great idea let down by BAAAD garage service.
The actual pickup of the car went smoothly, but the rest was a disaster.

At first I though the service part was satisfactory, but after a short use following the car got gradually worse then broke down; I eventually found that the fuel filter needed replacing, which was strangling the fuel to the engine, and an electrical cable below it must have been loose at best (or worst left disconnected), as that was also disconnected when found (hidden below the filter).
The filter is ticked off as replaced on the servicing receipt, but could not have been done.
On top of that there was a loose coolant pipe which had sheared off the main engine - it came off loose and leaked coolant over my driveway as I investigated why my freshly MOT'd and serviced car had broken down.

During the MOT I was told that lights were going to cost me about £400, and probably a further £200 or so after for other items), so I took the car back and found some in Rugby for £100 and a day off work; still much cheaper though.

I fitted the lights myself and used the free MOT retest option hoping I'd get the car sorted for £200 more.
Unfortunately it ended up costing about £430; the incredibly stressfull part was that they could not give me a total price until the very end of the day, AFTER THE WORK WAS FINISHED!
I'd telephoned them about 10 times during the course of the day begging for a total, but it was always a wait and see answer.

The upshot is that I paid in total £630, time off work, a lot of stress and worry over finances, and a further £70 on fixes (the actual fuel filter only cost £7), and had to fix my own car.
If I'd realised this would happen I'd have seriously considered scrapping the car as it's total worth is at best about £800.

So far servicing stop hasn't replied.
Good idea and booking service...bad garage.
They fixed what would make them money, not what necessarily needed doing; should be on Watchdog!
My advice...stick with a garage you can trust; trying to save money leaves you open to being ripped off and ultimately a service that you have no faith in. You wonder what they actually DID replace and repair.
any car - servicingstop.co.uk - Nik Narewal

Not happy. They were late collecting the car (I stayed home to wait for them) and only turned up after I called to remind them.

They charged me for synthetic oil when I did not ask for it. I told them I did not ask for it but they would not return the car unless I payed. They then tried to tell me that they would have to charge me if I wanted the fuel filter ofr the cabin filter replaced - even though it was advertised as being part of the full service that I had payed for

When I received the car back I also found that they had topped up the antifreeze with water (not good if you are trying to maintain the 50/50 ratio for your antifreeze). This was not professional and very disappointing as I believe this practice to be unprofessional. If you advertise to top up the 'fluids' - do it properly!!

Their are issues with the car that I am aware of myself that were not picked up on the 'service' and this has also made me call into question whether all the checks they were supposed to do were actually done.

I can not recommend servicing stop and I believe I would have received better value for money if I had gone directly to an independent garage.

Avoid at all costs! servicingstop.co.uk - Jon Stephenson

Tried to overcharge twice, avoid at all costs

Firstly tried to charge for two items that were 1) Not needed and 2) grossly overpriced. Then tried to charge a "surcharge" for special oil which they refused to remove. It too a call to the car manufacturer to get them to confirm that the vehicle did not need this. Finally they relented.

However to top it all off, they then charged an extra £25 "toward the cost of the next service" without permission - They have now agreed to refund this.

Paid for full service, have a look what is on offer for full service,I put a note do not carry out any extra without my consent, car was collected by 9am and I was called at 1pm someone claims to be in my side that, garage said they need to change all under bonnet fluid and will cost over £300 so do not agree as they do this all the time, just tell them to do the service u paid for, including oil.

I spoke to Garage and they told me,they have to put oil according to manufacturing ,will cost £24+VAT- I said no put the basic, they refused I told them then don't change just do other things,he replied we have done all other things but car has no oil we still need oil,I gave them go ahead, car returned,I asked the driver the list they said would be done, and he told me they are not aware they were only told to do the basic service, had I contacted them directly they would have carried out the work, for example service light is on,he told me they would have plugged and reset the fault but that was not part of the work, they were only told to do the oil, while I have been charged for but not done

timing belt check

spark plugs

oil

top up underbonnet

Ac and hose leaking (which my car has a leak but cause they did not do they failed to notice)

Pollen filter plus list goes on (see website)

he told me they are not aware of that ,what I found out they left customer car in my driveway perhaps they will tell the customer they were fixing the car while they have parked it from morning

Avoid at any cost even if they pay you the money,my car was returned very dirty inside out and grease all over even the area not needed,I am bringing to independent garage tomorrow to see if really they even changed air filter and oil filter

Garage told me to bring the car as they will give me discount if I book pre Mot check which I was expecting they would have done.

Strange they gave me a report all my 4 tyres have same mm :) while I have just changed front tyre ,no report of recommendation what needs to be done so wasting £108 for nothing ,gave them 14 days to put things right or I will take legal advice

I gave this a 1 star rating as this site won't let you give a minus rating.
I booked this service on 27/02/18 which they duly confirmed. It was arranged that my car would be collected, serviced and returned today 05/03/18. Their office rang me at 09:34 this morning to tell me that the garages driver had called in sick and couldn't collect my car (lie). I was then asked if I could drive to the garage. Shortly after I received another call asking what time I would be there (this was the first time the garage had heard of my car).

I duly arrived at the garage at the agreed time only to find out that their driver was not off sick, they had no knowledge of collecting my car, they had no knowledge of my car being booked in, they had no parts to service my car. On top of this, as they had no knowledge of my booking I would be treated as a 'drop-in' and as such probably have to wait all day.

ServiceStop offer incredibly low service rates but, unlike me, don't be taken in by it, they don't deliver what they advertise. If you leave the car at the garage they won't let you have it back until the bill is paid. I didn't wait or leave my car with them so it would seem I had a lucky escape.

any car - servicingstop.co.uk - Michael Ormrod

The car as scheduled was collected on Monday morning just after 8am. I received a call at 12.27pm letting me know that the car needed all 4 tyres replacing in order for it to pass it's MOT which I agreed to in addition to a few smaller works than needed to be carried out. I was assured that the car would be returned to me later in the day. At 3.11pm I hadn't received any communication from Servicing Stop or the garage so I called Servicing Stop to ask what was happening with the car. I was told that Servicing Stop were just about to call me to let me know what work needed to be carried out.

The details of work were the 4 tyres needed replacing, the synthetic oil surcharge and the brake fluid and pollen filter needed to be replaced. I asked if the car would be back today to which I was told yes it would be.

At 6pm I hadn't had the car returned and needed the car to take my daughter to school the next day. Apparently there had been a delay in getting the tyres so the car was returned to me and we rescheduled collection of the car to get the tyres put on the following day. When the car was returned we discovered some wrappers for McDonalds by the passenger seat of the car. We do not eat at McDonalds so the car had been used to go and get take away.

Somebody collected the car on Tuesday at around 10.30am and promised to get it returned by 2pm as I needed the car to collect my daughter from school.

At 2pm there was no sign of the car as the tyres still hadn't been received so the garage brought us a car to use so we could collect our daughter from school, the car that they delivered had no fuel in it so they told me to put £20 in it and they would reimburse me when they returned my car. I was assured the car would be back by 5pm at the latest. I called at 5.16PM and was told the car was on it's way.

At 5.53pm the garage called me and said they were too late for the MOT today and they would bring the car back by 11am at the latest the following day (today) Wednesday.

I called at 8.57 am today to check and they said yet it would be back by 11am. At 10.56 I called again and was told it would be another hour yet. At 11.56am my wife called Servicing Stop to let you know there was a problem and whilst she was on hold for Servicing Stop to find out what was going on I received a call from the garage saying the car was ready to be returned to me (what a coincidence?).

I finally had my car returned at 12.27 today.

When the car was returned it smelt of cigarette smoke. Nobody who uses the car smokes. I checked the mileage of the car and the odometer showed a mileage of 60229 miles. When the car was collected as per your report the mileage was 59974. The car therefore had been driven for 254 miles between us giving the car to be serviced and the car being returned more that 2 days later. The car is also absolutely filthy on the outside and over a quarter of a tank of fuel had been used. The garage therefore gave me £60 to cover the fuel I put into their car, 2 parking permits I had to use and for the fuel used, apologised and said they'd give me a free service and MOT the next time. They also admitted to trying to replace the fuel by putting £15 in the tank.

As you can probably gather there won't be a next time. We've used Servicing Stop for over 5 years now and have never received such dreadful service. I have had to make all the calls as there was no proactivity from the garage to tell me of any delays. I've been without a car for over 2 days. The car has been returned to me after being driven for 254miles, smelling of smoke, been used for take away and missing over 1/4 of a tank of fuel.

When the car was finally returned after being serviced by another garage, on Friday evening they returned the car with 3 old tyres in the back of the car after I had paid to have the car cleaned a day earlier.

These were left in my garden and promised would be collected the next day. 4 days later they were still in my garden and I ended up taking them to the local recycling centre myself.

The failed MOT stated one tyre needed replacing and 2 had advisories however I was told all 4 needed to be replaced at a cost of over £550.

Avoid them at all costs, they used to be a good company but seem to have lost their sense of trust a customer needs to place in a company looking after your vehicle

While Servicing Stop may have some genuinely satisfied customers (like the OP previously), sadly, too many tales like this come to the fore, and I suspect most users of this forum avoid them like the plague.

You think you are saving money over a main dealer, but it seldom works that way. To be deceived into buying three tyres that were not needed is pretty dispicable. Also no choice on tyre brand and price, and you can be pretty certain there's a fat margin of profit in that £550. You dont say what car or tyre size, but last week I had fitted (and balanced) to wife's Mini Cooper S four Continental 205/45x17 SSR 3 runflats for £480 - acceptable for a premium tyre.

Using a customer's car for private journeys is also questionable (would it be insured and was your permission was not given), and who's to say the OP wont be receving a summons in the post for something that happened when the car was not in his posession? What would have happed in the case of an accident?Lucky OP checked mileage.

You are dealing with a middle man with Servicing Stop, not the garage, so where does that chain of responsibility and liability lie? Ask yourself why you are paying to cover two profit centres - SS and the Garage doing the work?

It's a shame that the OP has had a poor experience but I suspect a complaint will simply fall on deaf ears or they will just dispute the allegations.

There is a lot to be said for finding a friendly garage or mechanic who will proffer a genuine view, tell you what really needs doing, helps build a level of trust and honesty and is unlikely to rip you off. As for customer trust in this case, there was none.

Never use a garage without knowing who they are and what their reputation is. This sounds like a way for garages with a bad reputation to get customers. After all, you can't know beforehand if your car will be passed to A. Crook and Sons Ltd who locals avoid like the plague.

I dealt with a tyres place 15 years ago, to have a couple of new tyres fitted. Despite refusing the 'free wheel tracking check' they did it, claimed the tracking was way out, and charged me for correcting it. I did pay, but never went back again. I had a service recently at a local indie which I'd found very good when they did excellent work on my previous car. This time they said they could not give a quote for the service because they did not know what needed doing. I trusted them on the basis of my previous experience. The final price was higher than the VW dealer, and they did not replace the spark plugs, which the VW dealer would have done. So even a respectable indie garage is not necessarily good value.

I often look at it the other way - the indy garage will do a better job but it will cost more. Like going to the supermarket (main dealer) you get decent stuff at a decent price or you can go to the local butcher/green grocer etc (indy garage) and pay a bit more but get a better job.

I think that the message from this thread is that there's no point in going through a 'middleman' to have your car serviced.

It's no more hassle to contact a dealer or an independent garage, and if you don't like your first quote you shop around.

These companies in some cases try to chisel down your margins on parts or use parts supplied by their approved suppliers. From our experience we get customers from these middle men who are totally online priced focused but with the expectation they will still receive a dealer level of service. I would encourage anyone new in an area and looking for their car servicing needs to

1. Ask friends and or work colleagues who they recommend

2. Google etc car servicing in your area but ignore the Ad links

3. Check the website/ social media pages of the garage to see what others say about them.

Many small garages work extremely hard at customer retention and providing a good service these days. I know that there are also many that don't but a little research prior to booking your car in will pay dividends in a successful experience. Once you've found a good garage try and show them a little loyalty the next time you need some work doing and most importantly recommend any good experiences to your friends or leave fair/ honest feedback on their site. This will drive up quality in the service side of cars for you and everyone else

Thank you for that, YG2007 - very well put, and far more effective in makikng the point than the poster above you, whose insults I had to delete.

Another fact that is often overlooked, is these “middle-man “ outfits are taking more profit out of the job than the garage doing the service.

Yes, the same happened to me!! My vehicle was collected at 10.30am yesterday morning, just for a service. I received a call at about 1pm to say that my disc brakes needed changing, bearing in mind that my vehicle passed the MOT 2 weeks ago with no advisories! I advised them not to do anything apart from the service. I then received a call at 3.15pm telling me I had to pay £652 otherwise I wouldn't get my car back? I paid the money as I needed my car for work. My car was delivered back this morning with an invoice for front disc pads charging £414.15. I will be reporting the company.

This sounds like extortion. It should always be possible to pay for the work you’ve agreed to and take the car away.

It may be worth examining the car to see whether anything has actually been done to your brakes ?

So-the invoice for service and front discs was made out and submitted after the customer had declined the additional brake work?
