Ford C-max 1.6 Tdci - Cooling system - AJT

A few days ago I noticed that the radiator fan was running whenever I started the car - is that normal? It was a frosty morning.

Yesterday I noticed that it took approx 20 miles for the temp gauge to come up to usual running temp - needle almost vertical, moving erratically on the way. Same again today. Can anyone help with a diagnosis? Thanks

Thermostat is remaining open - would be my guess

Our old C-Max 1.6 TDCi took forever to heat up in the morning (but not as long as the Mondeo TDCi that preceded it). Gauge was not eratic but on a cold day (below freezing) it would drop if you were stationary in trafic. Dealer replaced stat under warranty but it did not change anything. Kept car 5 years in total, exactly the same to the end.

The reason I am concerned is that this is a complete change in behaviour. Previously the engine warmed up to full working temp within a couple of miles.
