Audi A4 - steering problems with A4 - janruss

My sons A4 is a high mileage diesel estate about 10 years old. Recently the car has been difficult to steer, pulling both sides, going where it wants on bumpy roads etc. The tracking has been checked, the tyres are ok and the local garage has had it up on the ramp and cant see any problems. Any ideas gratefully received.

Audi A4 - steering problems with A4 - Crasher

The front suspension links on the A4 are prone to wear and for the inexperienced in these cars, the wear can be difficult to find. I had a Passat 3B V6 4 Motion in a few weeks back (it uses the exact same front suspension) and it was pulling around when driving and braking. We found a tiny amount of wear in the upper front links on both sides. We happen to be doing this the day one of our young mechanics was being assessed by his college tutor and he was fascinated in the tiny amount of wear and subsequently how appallingly difficult it is to get the 100-mm long top link bolt out. We showed him the two methods, the official VW tool which costs hundreds of pounds and the old fashioned tool, the hot spanner! The owner called me yesterday (a brilliant chap whose cars I have been fixing for 25 years) and he said it was perfect and he was very happy.
