I have been offered an ex company car, Mondeo TDCI 2.0 143 BHP manual Ghia Estate with 96 K on the clock, for 4 Grand.

I know these cars have a good reputation and don't personally know of any problems, with this particular one, it has been serviced regularly and not abused.

So what is likely to go wrong over the next couple of years ? are there any weaknesses or any issues I should consider.

It will be used for mainly motorway work and general running about. How many miles can these engines run for and remain reliable ?

I think its a good deal, any ideas or advice ?

Is it a new-shape one? The service regime for those is 12,500 miles or one year, and the cambelt is 80,000 miles or 6 years (if I remember right), so worth checking that has been done.

The DPF installation on these seems very robust, I had one for over 3 years and nearly 40K miles from new and had no problems at all. I believe the DPF service life is supposed to be around 100K miles, but as the car you're looking at has done nearly 20K miles per year, it sounds like it's done a lot of motorway miles which is ideal for extending the DPF life.

Apart from that, try and have a test drive and check the clutch is OK, that there isn't clonking or clunking at low speed (especially when setting off from rest) and that it doesn't bump and crash over bumps.

One thing -- these cars are not hugely economical, expect an average of around low 40s mpg. They are big and heavy.

There are many of these with 200000 on the and apart from an odd oil change have never been touched even if you had to spend a few bob on the car you are getting a lot of car for very little money at 98k its hardly run in.

Quick update,

Got the car, its equipped with leather seats so an added bonus, all is well, I had it serviced at Ford, £ 100.00 all in for a minor service, no problems found at all.

Plus I got it for £3900 ( as the service was due )

A good deal and hope to get a good few years motoring out of it for what was a bargain price.

I Must say its better to drive than any VW, feels more like an Audi A6, possibly not so sturdily built but still very impressive.

Never had a Ford since the 1990s when they turned out excerable rubbish, this is quite a surprise.

Great stuff and you paid less for the car than 6 months depreciation on most run of the mill new cars.

Ford have come a long way since the dreadful metal misery of the early 1990s. They did make a few good cars but mostly In those days the bean counters ran Ford, churned out poor cars and relied on their admittedly brilliant marketing department to sell it for them. That worked well until the Mk 5 Escort when people saw through it, forcing a revision within two years and a complete redevelopment within five. Within just a few short years of that the engineers were being listened to and they launched the Focus in 1998.

Modern Fords - Fiesta and Focus especially - don't top sales charts because they advertise them well. That wouldn't work anymore, we can spot a poor car at 100 paces these days and theres all sorts of alternatives on offer from Korean marques, an improving Vauxhall, French cars now with a semblence of reliability and greater access to 'premium' German brands now the British aren't being ripped off for new cars like we were 20 years ago.

Don't bean counters still run Ford and every other manufacturer? I think Fords success stems from strong brand loyalty built on cars which did the job, were reasonably priced, easy to service and a marketing dept. that understood the customer. There was always a model to aspire to and if you couldn't reach the next model up, you could go to the next size engine or trim level.

Bean counters run most large companies now, if they didn't, we wouldn't have to speak to some poorly paid soul in an offshore call centre. A call to customer services of any of the supermarkets or Virgin or AOL will prove the point.

Of course bean counters run the place but those bean counters now take quality of product into account. 20 years ago the bean counters allowed the groundworkers to merely make something with wheels and an engine, now they recognise said beans can be made bigger if the car is actually worth buying.

ETA: Another example is most Korean manufacturers. 10 years ago they churned out reliable but uninspiring, average guff. These days to be competative they're making good cars but obviously their list prices have inflated in due course.

They do drive very well, the ride / handling compromise is excellent and they smooth away all but the very worst road bumps and noise. The interiors are nice, not quite Audi quality but the bits you touch are nicely done.

Do check it's had the cambelt changed, though. As mentioned before, if you find you're averaging low 40s mpg at the pump, that's about right. The PSA 2.0 diesel is just not particularly economical in the Mondeo, although 40+mpg isn't bad for a 1700kg family barge.

With mine, the measured mpg actually never varied that much -- the very worst tankful was about 37mpg, the very best about 45. It didn't seem to matter much how hard or gently you drove it. I averaged 42.5mpg in the 3+ years and nearly 40K miles I had it.
