2001 Mercedes ML 55 - BAS - Hitchy

We purchased a new 2001 ML 55 in Spring, 2001. Recently, we have experienced a dangerous and disconcerting problem: the "BAS" light comes on and the vehicle almost screeches to a stop in the middle of the road! It has now happened three times, and everytime the driving conditions are excellent (no wet, slick or "curvy" road) and we were driving at slow to moderate speeds (15-50 mph).

It is to the point that we are afraid to drive the car...it's dangerous. Has anyone else experienced this?

If you lift the bonnet there is a square aluminium block with a lot of brake pipes going to it and a black coloured ECU this is the main ABS brake control unit I would suggest that this has gone faulty it is quite common on older Mercs often the death of many cars. This part is very expensive so I would double check before anybody changes it also try the numerous Mercedes forums.

The car is dangerous and should not be on the road. It needs to be put on a trailer to a garage and be properly fixed.

Or, for a somewhat less dramatic approach, find out which fuse runs the brake assist circuit and pull it until the thing gets to the garage to be fixed.

Do you know the Brake assist circiut is faulty I very much doubt it replies like this when you do not seem to know what your talking about can be very dangerous.ZThe chances are the brake ECU is faulty or the ABS unit a fault on either and the car should not be driven.

I would suggest a more constructive approach be taken before the abs system is put to death.Take the car for a diagnostic check to see if there is anything logged for your problem.Hopefully a competent techie will advise you.hth
