My car's handbook says the car should be run on 98RON but it can run on 95RON. I've had the car since new. When I first filled up I used 95RON but found the engine to be a big sluggish. I switched to Shell 99RON (Optimax as it was and now V Power and which I understand cleans engines) and used it no problems since. Today I have found that my local Shell garage is closing down at the end of the week to be replaced by a BP garage. My nearest Shell garage will then be over 10 miles away across a Town that I don't normally travel through. My question therefore is what is my nearest equivalent in terms of the other brands. In my area I will have besides the BP garage a Texaco and a Sainsburys and I sometimes go by a Tesco or Asda.

My old VAG petrol was supposed to use 98 RON for max performance but I could not tell any difference when I used 95 RON which as you say the handbook said was fine. You would have to be very sensitive to changes to notice any changes, I could not pl;us the mpg was no better either. Did 113,000 miles in the car and all on Supermarket 95 RON except a couple of tanks full and the car was still perfect when I sold it.

All modern cars have knock sensors so no damage will be done.

When i first had the car I put some 95 ron into it and noticed some knocking sounds. When I filled up with the V Power that disappeared and I noticed the engine ran much better so I stayed with the fuel.

1.6fsi should run perfectly well on Euro 95 I suggest somebody has altered the timing if you notice so much difference.

Especially given the cold ambient conditions. Anyone that thinks that their engine is knocking with ambient emperatures of 5C is either imagining things or has something very wrong with their engine. The difference between 95 and 97 ROn is only a few degrees in spark timing anyhow.

Have run my 1.8(2003)vRS on 95RON since the day it was born with no apparent (well, not to my ears) side-effects!

It's just approaching 97,000 and still goes like a rocket – as anybody travelling on the southern Bedford by-pass this afternoon could testify :–)

Go well, go Shell...

To part answer the OPs question - BP Ultimate and Tesco Momentum have a higher octane rating. Don't think Sainsburys do one and I'm not sure about Asda. As per others, the car should really be fine on 95RON so probably sensible to get it checked out.
