This will and does sound daft but I'd recommend a Kia Picanto 1.1 auto. My wife had one and I'm 6'1" and a couple of kilos heavier than you and it was surprisingly good to drive, fine on the motorway at 70 ish and great around town, much comfier and better visibility than the Fiat 500 she now drives. Plenty of shopping space on the rear seats. Cheap to tax and insure and mid 40s mpg on a run. After a couple of years of no claims you can jump into something with a bigger engine.

Alternatively with reliability in mind especially on auto gearboxes, look for a Japanese car, Toyota Yaris, Honda Civic, Mitsubishi Lancer.

I liked the Picanto Auto very much when our Kia dealer lent me on the other week whilst the Cee'd SW was being serviced. Amazingly there was a couple of inches headroom for me and I'm 6ft 2ins tall.

Mrs SDA liked the car but felt it wasn't big enough in the boot/rear seat for all her gear for her choirs (which sometimes includes keyboards) and the lip on the boot was too low for hauling her cases out when they're loaded with music etc.

But unless you have specific needs like the dearly beloved I think the Picanto is an excellent choice.

I quite like the Nissan Note 1.6 auto my wife's uncle has, though Auto-Trader seem to suggest these start at about £3k.

My 6ft 6 friend drives a Fiat Punto. My 6ft 7 friend has a Honda Civic. Most people will fit in most cars!

The trouble with small automatic cars is that whilst the body is relatively small, the manufacturers fit a big engine in the automatic versions and then the fuel economy suffers. The Note suffers from that issue as does the Mini. The Jazz and Verso S have engines under 1.4 litres in their auto variants which is much more in keeping with the size of car.

There's a reason for this. Performance with an automatic is usually impaired compared to a manual-even if the official numbers suggest otherwise.

The problem is that sharp aceleration is often proceded by a period of overrun. The auto will shift to a higher gear and is caught short when the driver tries to accelerate. Bigger engines can cope better since they have more low end grunt.

I realise why they do it, but that's what kickdown is for. My wifes 8 year old Yaris Verso 1.3 auto can manage as can the Jazz and Verso S, so why do they still fit large engines 10 years on. Probably because they don't want to spend money developing a decent small engine drive train.

Well, there's limited demand for small engine autos so it might not be economically worthwhile worthwhile. Don't toyota use a CVT in the Yaris? Probably ideal for small engines and no kickdown issues.

I used to own a jazz automatic, quite smooth, 2500rpm around 60mph 3000rpm 70mph. Can go fast if you want to suits your budget. Better buy one with full service history because the gearbox have a minor problem with incorrect oil use and irregular oil change. Returns very good mpg 56mpg motor way 42-45 urban and 47-50mpg combined

If you're going for a Jazz auto make sure it's a CVT autobox not the horrible I-Shift which ran for a few years. The original CVT box was good and the recently re-introduced CVT is even better but the I-Shift in between was a shocker. You should be able to get an original within your budget.

Thanks for the replys

i have heard before people saying stick to the japanese cars for autos but its sounds like the Kia Picanto 1.1 auto might be worth a look into although i was worryed about getting such a small engie for a automatic but if it fine then thats good news

and will look into Toyota Yaris and honda jazz making sure it has a CVT

i recently move up north so i have no one i can take to look at the car is the AA car inspection worth the money ? also what should i look for in a used car is 7 years the oldest i should get ? and how many miles should be the limit ? thanks

This dealer www.automaticcarsltd.co.uk/ specialises in automatics and over the last few years seems to have made a habit of finding very low mileage Yaris Verso autos. I'm not sure how they find them but considering they were last sold new in 2005 it's amazing they keep coming up with cars that only have mileage in the teens of thousands.

I've never visited or bought a car from them as they're darn sarf where it's easier to find auto's, indeed I've even heard of dealer groups shipping autos from oop north to darn sarf because they're easier to sell in the South East.
