Did this problem occur when the fuel filter was changed?
The symptoms would suggest air entry into the fuel system, amongst other possible causes. Did you change the two "O" rings on the thermostatic Tee, did you get them the right way round (they're different, one black and the other blue) and was the filter of reputable German maunufacture?
Failure to observe all of these points could cause air ingress problems leading to intermittent starting.
I will only fit filters made by Mann & Hummel or Bosch. Some VAG branded filters are now Chinese and can cause air leaks due to the bore for the thermostatic Tee being inaccurately formed. Other brands of filter are supplied with two identical "O" rings which may not give an air-tight joint.
