at 1am this morning i had a telephone call from the police informing me my daughter had been stopped by the police whilst getting petrol home from work. Seems her car wasnt insured. She purchased the vehicle on a sunday and 1 hour before picking it up i went on line and made changes to her policy as it stated to do so on the Bell webseite, obviously the contact centre was closed anyway. The vehicle details have not been changed and therefore she had been driving for 4 weeks not insured. I ended up purchasing 24 hour insurance cover so me and my husband could pick up the car and he could drive it home, the policeman was very nice about it all and didnt want to have to impound the vehicle for £125 and £25 per day and give my daughter 6 points and a criminal record.

I can't believe that these details have never been inputted into their system what has happened to them?.

I am waiting for the contact centre to open to play hell with them regarding their inadequacies, the policemen said i should be able to get them to refund the days insurance and i will also insure they waiver fees for changes if any incurred.

In 7 years of purchasing car insurance on line and making changes online i have never come across anything like this but the police say it's all too common.

If the Co admit it is their fault then ask if they are prepared to send you a letter saying that they held themselves at risk in relation to the use of the car on the day in question. If so use this to negate the FPN 200 6 points.

Never believe anything done on the box always check, check, check. In any case if nothing back from Co in 4 weeks i.e. amended Cert of Insurance warning bells should have been clanging loud and clear.

There is a delay in most cases in updating the insurance database so you still need the certificate printed out as evidence of insurance and allowing officers to check the status directly by phone with the insurers.

what a refreshing change for a policeman to make a good judgement call on a genuine situation.

Those 6 points could of made your daughter almost uninsurable!

yes was very grateful and so was she, unlike his colleague who apparently wanted to seize the car immediately. There are some genuine good cops out there.

I can't believe some of these replies, the police had their facts wrong.

Regardless of where they got them, that leaves an innocent driver stopped by the forces of the state, in the middle of nowhere.

I'd be very busy checking out my rights and filling in an online police complaint form right now.
