Does anyone know of a list of new cars that can be bought with either a full size spare wheel or the ability to purchase one as an extra but to still fit into the proper storage space.

HJ had the rudiments of a list but I can't find it! The only other way is to shortlist cars you do like and look at the spec brochures online for them.

I've been driving for 10 years and still haven't used my spare wheel.

Driving 38 years and 2 punctures that I have had to change at the roadside. Had another 2 where a tyre was flat in the morning. One of our cars has a space saver, one run flats and the other no spare at all. Having a space saver is not an issue for me.

Having no spare becomes an issue if you kerb the side wall (especially eco tyres) and can't use the can of sealent.

Absolutely nothing wrong with full diameter space savers.

In the wet the other three chav wheels will lose grip before the pram wheel does.

But does the baby fall out?

Only when you throw it away with the bath water...

I was quite impressed with the spacesaver on my Octavia when I had a puncture the other day: I kept to an indicated 60 mph but otherwise drove normally, and noticed no difference in the car's handling. It just shows what complete overkill 18" wheels and 225/40 tyres are on a car like a Skoda estate.

Skoda offer a spare wheel as a (cheap) optional extra, which seems a reasonable compromise. For most Skodas this is full-size, but on the vRS it's a spacesaver as the oversized standard wheel and tyre won't fit in the space where a 17" wheel will.

So what are you meant to do with the punctured, oversized wheel and tyre if you've got a full load?

Good point. In the Skoda's case it would fit into the space but the boot floor wouldn't go down fully - so one would just about manage (I didn't have a full load so it just sat in the boot).

But it could be an issue for other cars where the full-size wheel won't fit at all. Maybe if travelling with a full load of passengers and luggage one should take ropes or an 'octopus' to strap the wheel on the roof - again, no good if you don't have a car with roof rails.

We went on holiday last week in SWMBO's Mini Cooper Roadster - it's a 2-seater with a much better boot than a normal Mini, but we filled it with luggage. I must see if the handbook has anything on this: I think if we'd had a puncture the wheel might just have gone in the space behind the seats if not in the spacesaver's cradle.

I was reading the spare wheel generally is becoming somewhat outdated. It's now so rare to get a fast puncture that some manufacturers aren't even supplying spare wheels. Obviously if you've got run flats the clue is in the title as to why you wouldn't need it right away.
