Fabia 3 estate 1.6 auto - petrol - Should I buy this car? - billjratt

Hello, First post but I've read a lot of the old threads.

I've taken first option on a 59plate fabia estate 1.6 petrol, automatic gearbox, top spec.

It is a rare, and doesn't seem to appear in the brochures or in webland.

I assume the engine is a 1.6 FSi usually found in the octavia, and am prepared to use 5-star petrol (am I showing my age!) or the best equivalent, in order to keep the engine healthy.

Problem may be though, how do I know the previous owner did the same? Is there any easily accessed evidence to betray impending doom? (code reader is en-route from Ebay as I write)

Apart from that, the only thread of interest seems to be the 16" wheels with low-profile tyres. If it really makes that much difference I'll pay a visit to the scrappy and get 5 'proper' ones.

Thanks in anticipation for any pertinant info -

Bill

Maybe post your enquiry on to Briskoda...they know rather a lot about Skodas there.

As you describe the car there are over 100 on autotrader If you are to buy a Fabia there are plenty of much more desirable versions one other point they will run quite happily on standard euro 95.

And won't need the wheels changed to make the ride acceptable!

Fabia is a nice small car and the estate makes it a sensible load carrier. Most people would shrink with horror at a 1.6 auto, and you may find that the car is under powered, especially going up hills and falls between gear ratios. Only a decent drive will tell you that. A diesel will have far better characteristics, but if you do less than 10,000 miles pa, you may find that you are better off in the petrol.

I will be surprised if the car requires anything better than 95RON fuel; i.e. standard unleaded.

The 16" wheel are not too bling to upset the ride, but again, test drive the car over your usual journeys.

Thankyou peeps.

I now know the engine is a 16valve - not the Tsi so assume it's less refined as the emissions (road tax!) are higher and fual efficiency lower. Having said that, cost of ownership may be reasonable if it doesn't have all the problems of a sophisticated version.

Ho hum, we'll see what it feels like on the day, but still looking at all makes with an open mind.

We have a 1.6auto Focus and it is very adequately nimble with plenty of power. The thing about autos is you can put your foot down without fear of breaking the engine or gearbox if it's warmed up. It spins up to the red line and changes up at exactly the right time so when overtaking that 40mph artic holding everyone up [although most these days have the decency to break their speed limit otherwise the non-motorway roads would be gridlocked] you only have to worry about the steering! This sort of 'italian tuneup' is actually good for the engine as well; gets the oil circulating nicely along the passageways.
