Ford Escort/MK2 1978 - Battery light glowing - jaymcg

Hey,

I have an electrical problem with my mk2 escort, the problem is that the battery light is glowing slightly as I'm driving, as I turn more accessory's on like head lights, wipers, indicators the battery light glows brighter.

I have a multi meter but just don't know where to start. When I start the engine the battery light glows bright red then just give it a little rev and it goes out and the battery then tests 14V, so it is charging (battery reads just above 12V with engine off).

I have checked, cleaned and tightened all earths to engine and body and the same with all positive leads to battery, starter motor ect ect, basically everything while I was at it but still no improvement, also the head lights are more of a reddish glow and not their white bright light that they are ment to be but do slightly get brighter when the revs rise but still very dim, wipers slow too.

Hope somone can maybe help

Thanks, Jay

It's a known problem on Fords of this age-there is a Service letter about it-basically the connections on the back of the alternator are replaced.IIRC changed from push-on to a screw connector-just the thick wire.

The service letter was actually for early Mk.III but it cured mine-which had same symptoms.

This problem is certanly alternator related.

If it's not a fault with the connections then I'm afraid it's a problem with the alternator itself and it will need to be repaired or exchanged.

You can measure the charging voltage across the battery with your multimeter, OP, which should be about 14.5 Volts. Turn all the electrically powered items on that you can think of (headlamps, heated rear screen, etc) and see whether there's very much change. There shouldn't be.

You should be moderately reving the engine whilst carrying out this test. Don't get anything caught up in any moving belts whilst doing so.

My bet is that the alternator will be found to be faulty, but, without the opportunity to actually test the car, it's impossible to be sure. I beleive that many garages and auto electricians will test batteries and alternators for free, or very cheaply, anyway. Perhaps this might be a good direction to go.

I've had exactly these symptoms with the diode pack losing one of its three phases.

New diode pack cured it, but you may want to confirm the diagnoses with an oscilloscope connected to the output.

Let us know what you find.

Might also want to consider changing the brushes? I also had thnis on an old 1977 Avenger with a Lucas 18 ACR alternator. New brushes fixed the problem.

Easy to change on 16/18 ACR alternators.
