Honda Jazz Auto (CVT) 55 Plate - Low Mileage Service Intervals - Jeff L

My wifes Jazz only covers 1200 miles p.a. (100 miles a month) and all journeys are within 10 miles of home. We have had the car from new and It has been serviced every year. Last year it cost £200 for an Interim Service and M.O.T. It is now due again and we are wondering if we could save some money and only have it serviced say once every 2 years or maybe just have the oil changed each year instead of a service? Any views would be welcome. It will of course have to have an M.O.T. and I have just discovered that Halfords Auto Centres (ex Nationwide) are doing them for half price if you book online. I am also going to see if my local council have an M.O.T. centre as this was mentioned on Martins Money Tips website. Any comments welcome. Thank you

Your choice but a low milage car sometimes needs more checks since parts can deteriorate due to lack of use.

If you want to reduce your motoring costs sell the car and use the bus.

You would probably be even better off if you sold it and took a taxi in the long run as doing that sort of mileage is not at all helpful to the engine. If you decide to keep it then you should definitely have it serviced and possibly even change the oil between them too.

Halfords are excellent at MOTs I use them - no advisories!

If you have advisories and are motring unsavvy, they may very well charge you two arms and legs to fix all those advisories: some of which may be neither safety related nor needed.

If you know what you are doing, you would not post here so I advise if you do use Halfords, keep tight hold of your wallet.

Cars deteriorate in some respects as much through age as mileage. I appreciate that it must be important for your wife to have the freedom of a car (or presumably you wouldn't still keep it) but if possible you should take the car out yourself, say twice a month, for a good run of at least 20 miles. It'll last far longer if you do.

Depending on the area you reside in, public transport may not be suitable or have limited availability.

Where do you have the car serviced currently - main dealer or an independent? Some main dealers operate their own servicing schemes for cars over three years old. For example, when we had our Mazda 2, we had the last service/MOT done using the dealers own servicing plan. This level of service we chose gave a slightly more comprehensive service than the Mazda one together with a half price MOT, and for the two worked out approx £50 cheaper than the four year Mazda service and MOT.

Why not ask for the views of the service manager as regards whether all the items due on the next service are needed. Presumably as the last service was an interim, the next service due will be a major service.

I can only echo above comments. The first mile of each journey does far more damage to the engine than the next 100 miles. With short infrequent use, most moving parts (not just the engine) do not get to operating temperature and corrosion problems often occur prematurely. Cars driven daily on journeys over 10 miles usually age more slowly than ones used solely for trips to the newsagent. Since you're out of warranty, you shopuld be looking at independent servicing-but don't be tempted to extend servicing intervals.

One point about the Honda CVT. The automatic gearbox oil MUST be replaced every 24,000 miles. The oil is very expesnive and is only available from Honda dealers iirc.

If you don't have it done on time, or with the incorrect oil, the gearboxes have a habit of disintegrating. Their replacement costs could be more than the car is worth..
