is it really normal for a car that does no more than 7,000 miles a year to need a full set of tyres EVERY yearly service?

Yet again my dads car supposedly needs brand new tyres "as they are on the legal limit". I cant help feeling that the garage are taking the mick (especially when they want to charge over £180 per tyre). When challenged this year (when they were reminded that the tyres are a year old and have done no more than 7000 miles) they have come out with an excuse of "tyre Stepping" . What does this actually mean???

Sounds very very dodgy indeed. By tyre stepping I would assume they mean sawtooth tyre wear, which I have had on every VW or Audi I have ever owned. It is when the inner or outer tread wears in a stepped or overlapped way, which Audi say is normal on cars driven on motorways primarily. But in the essence of your post, there is no way a car like a Volvo V70 could wear out a set of tyres in 7K miles or a year assuming your dad doesn't wheelspin around the place, or unless the wheel alignment is catastrophically out (eg suspension component bent etc) !

If he has been replacing his 1 year and 7000 miles tyres on a garages word he must be an idiot. the garage will be having a right laugh and they will be selling the old tyres as part worn for personal profit.

Not a T5 is it and Dads enjoying a midlife crisis, nothing wrong with either, and long may he enjoy ripping the roads up..;)

Think he needs to go to a proper tyre indy, not a fast fit chain though, and get some proper advice, preferably from the organ grinder.

Just out of interest what tyre size/rating/make/model are we talking about here.

I would agree. The way a car is driven is the primary cause of tyre wear, I drive primaraly for economy and a st of tyres lasts me about 30,000 miles but in my youth I could get though them in 10,000, and cars weren't as fast then. Surely he must be able to see the depth of the tread before they are replaced, even if they have worn unevenly they could still well be legal.

Im a retired cab driver and i alwys got between 50000 and 100000 kms from my tires, although i did rotate them every 10000.Pirelli 6000 were the chosen tyres by cabbies.

Have seen lots of derogatory comments online about P6000's, i found them to be very good, reasonably quiet, supple, grippy and wore well.

As you rightly say, you can't beat sensible rotation to get the best from tyres, most drivers too bone idle to bother, don't even have the strength to wash their own cars any more here, people have too much money, that'll change.

GB.

Rotating the tyres introduces a new wear pattern, effectively 'scuffing' the tyre into a new, rapidly wearing pattern.

Having said that, I'm not adverse to swapping my fronts every now and then to reduce the camber effect of 'right hand down a bit'.

Swap my tyres front to rear every year but never side to side which can accelerate wear as the tyre gets used to rotating the opposite way. Many tyres are directional thus cannot be changed side to side anyway.
