Hyundai I40 - Re : Insurance claims - datstick

I was recently involved in a rear end in my 4 week old Hyundai I40. The other driver has admitted liability and his insurance company have contacted me confirming this and offering to handle my case directly without getting my insurance company involved. The damage appears to be cosmetic only involving the replacement of the main bumper, bumper cover mouling and tailgate cover moulding.

Unfortunately their nominated repair company are not "Hyundai approved" and as a result the delear I bought the car from says using them may put my warrranty at risk [the main reason why I bought the car].

The Dealer has offered to take care of my case using a legal company to handle my claim directly with the 3rd part driver's insurance company. The car would be fixed in the Hyundai dealer's workshop and I would be provided with a hire car whilst the work is carried out.

Has anybody out there had their claim handled in this way ? I've never heard of this scheme before and it sounds to good to be true !

The repairs and hire car are financed by a credit agreement you sign that means you agree to pay them back should they not recover the costs from the other Insurer after 52 weeks.

Some will have extra cover that will make you not liable, but if the other company dispute the amount of the claim you may need to appear in court.

The hire car will be charged at at least double the normal rate.

The garage receive about £400 commission from the hire car company for getting you to sign. It's not unusual for garages linked to credit hire companies to hang the repairs out so the hire company get more in charges

There may be a dispute as the other Insurer have already offered you a hire car which may be viewed by a court that you did not mitigate your losses if you use the garages "Credit Hire" car.

Why not speak to the Insurer, explain the situation, they will be more than happy to pay for repairs at the Hyundai garage and provide their own hire car as it will greatly reduce the cost to them.

Google "Credit hire complaints"

It's due to credit hire that a fair proportion of the increases in car insurance premiums

Based on a previous personal experience with a simple knock like this I would allow the owner of the other vehicle to sort the damage provided they use a reputable bodyshop. You will have no worries about credit agreements and claiming back your excess. The Hyundai dealer is taking total nonsense about the warranty, the only parts that will be affected are the bumper and trim, the rest of the car will remain untouched and the warranty will be intact. What can go wrong with the bumper and trim in the next 5 years, they will almost certainly be genuine parts that they fit since there will be no pattern parts on the market yet for a car as new and rare as the i40.

Totally agree, let them sort it. The work they carry out will be covered by their gaurantee. Nothing to worry about.

If the repairs are carried out at a Hyundai dealer, then the replaced parts will still be covered by the original warranty - if it's repaired elsewhere then replacement parts will be excluded from the warranty.
