I was driving my Peugeot 306 d turbo home from work the other day and while accelerating up a dual carriageway the car revved too its limiter and puffed out clouds of black smoke then subsequently cut out while doing 70.

I got it to the side of the road and checked i hadn't snapped a timing belt before attempting to restart the engine, after confirming this wasn't the problem i attempted to restart the car which didn't happen so i got it towed home, left it for a few hours and went back to it and it started so i drove it around a few streets by my house to see if the problem still occurred but only when i got it to more than 2500 rpm, which i thought could be the turbo.

but after 2 days of not driving it, it all seems fine and the faults dont occur. anyone got any idea whats wrong with it?

thought it might be turbo related but would this happen every time if it was this because i drove it today and turbo worked fine and no reving or black smoke problem?

If its only happening when its hot it could be burning lubrcating oil due to a blocked breather system or a worn engine. When it does this can you stop the engine by turning the ignition off?

the first time it happened it turned itself off but when i tested it by my house i could prevent it happening by turning the key off

I you can turn it off that won't be the problem then, is it a fully mechanical pump or electronicaly controlled?

Haven't really had a good look at it will get back too you about what it is. What problems occur on the pumps then?

I have never heard of a pump causing this problem - but there is always a first time. What year is the car, and does it have a Lucas or Bosch pump?

It's a 98 with a Lucas pump but hasn't done anything wrong for a day and a half now and turbo seems to work fine.

Well, an oil seal might not start seriously leaking until the oil is hot and thin which it would be on a motorway run but not on local runs. It can take 20 minutes or so for the oil to get to 100C. It's worth a check before looking at anything else.

Have you checked the oil level? If it's over full the oil may have become contaminated with water or diesel.

There is a little bit too much oil in there but nothing excessive, so are you saying oil deal on the turbo? Cos Ive got a 'new' turbo coming Wednesday on the strength of what I read before posting this siding with my suspicions.
