audi a4 v6 - 2.5tdi v6 start issue after camshaft replacement - bizza25

hi folks

intermittent start problem on my 2.5tdi after camshafts and timing belts done.

sometimes it fires on first or 2nd turn in the morning with no white smoke other days 6/7 turns and a puff of white smoke (i assume this is just the unburnt fuel from failed cranks)

seems to start ok (on 2nd turn) when warmed up , but sometimes could take 3 or 4 turns if sitting during the day in work carpark a few times took 6/7 turns and white smoke embarressing when the car looks so good! during the 6/7 turns cranks does not seem to get any slower so seemingly battery is not the issue.

doesnt make any difference if fuel tank is low or full

have replaced temp sensor but no difference. if i remove sensor car always starts in 2 turns then fan comes on.im sure it would be more difficult in winter without this though!

on thing i noticed since new sensor is that interal temp reading seems higher than what would be outside,,today it was reading 26c but i think it was really only 18c outside!

could a new near £35 sensor be duff on purchase?? would this make a difference i wonder?..

battery seems ok 12.5v standing. 14v running and 10.3v during cranking. seems the same voltage during a 2 turn start as a 6/7 turn start mulitmenter stays obove 10v when cranking so not wanting to spend £100 on a new battery just yet! especially after £1500 in new cams, belts and labour.

what is the recommended cranking volts for the v6tdi ?

before all this work car started in a couple of turns, but always took a few turns more in winter.

had car back to garge who say timing is spot on but there 'could be wear' in my fuel pump...had pump scanned by a bosch guy who said pump timing looked ok an no code but mechanic who did cam work could have timing slightly out at the valves?

apart from paying another audi tech to take off the rockers and re-do the work i'm stumped on what it could be

any ideas welcome!

No specific knowledge of that car or engine, but it does smack of a timing issue. Have you had it scanned for any error codes by an Audi tech?

I'm sure someone else will be along, but in the meantime check out the Audi forums. I make a point of joining them whenever I buy a new car and find them invaluble!

thanks ..yes have vag com no codes for anythng apart from 1 engine mount and a speaker!

you say smacks of a timing issue...for the goo starts are you saying that coincidentaly the engine has previously just come to stop on the perfect crank to make the good start? and when it starts bad the engine has stopped on a bad crank position? suppose that is possible

Which "temp sensor" have you changed I assume the Coolant sensor. That would not effect the air temp readings. Does you problem get worse the longer you leave the car. I suspect you have an air leak into the fuel system. Difficult to find but the system need pressure testing to identify any leak. Regards Peter

Those engines use a rotary distributer pump which is timed from one of the cam belts. When the timing belt is changed, the pump timing must be recalibrated, using VCDS. The "chalk and lock" method doesn't work, no matter how accurate you are.

Hi mate just wondering if you found the problem? My v6 2005 a4 2.5tdi is doing the same thing. I took it to an audi dealer and they plugged it in and said there was not fault but something wasn't right but could take 5 hours to find at £125 an hour so thought I'd try getting some help on here to tell my local garage to do? Hope your cars good now, my two problems are exactly the same as your starting issue when cold and the second is a vibration on idle? It sound like its missing but I don't know that much about cars? Hope someone can shed some light as is really frustrating having a lovely car but starts like a bag of spanners when cold then vibrates. Thanks in advance.

hi sorry for late reply i have not been on this site since problems resolved..

to resolve i replaced the battery and ran through 1 ltr of desiel purge

car was cranking at 10.3 v not fast enough when fuel is warm.

run purge to injectors by disconecting the fuel filter and throwing the fuel too and return lines into the can of purge (not via fuel tank)

car ran a dream after that. must have had some dirt on injectors after they were removed when camshafts were done. this should cure the vibration at idle.

I also bought at 202 glow plug fuse on ebay thinking it could be the issue but that never helped.
