I can't believe MB are buying Renault's 1.5 DCI engine. The irony is that MB were in the diesel game before pretty much everyone else. Now, they're going to be sharing engines with Dacia.

Why not? It's a great engine in the Nissan Note, one of the best small diesels out there.

You seem to forget, M-B's smallest diesel is an utter donkey, soon to be extinct.

I'm more suprised that M-B didnt do a deal on the new Renault-Nissan R9M 1.6 chain cam diesel engine, recently fitted to the Qashqai and Megane. Now that's a fantastic engine - no DPF issues and 119g/km CO2, even on a big lump like the Qashqai. Even HJ likes this particular diesel - no mean feat!

HJ only likes it because it has got a chain!

MB's engines have been behind the curve for a while. Have the 'Kompressor' engines finally expired yet?

Unless you've got a Ssangyong - then even the old MB engines are fantastic.

How many will buy this for zero VED ( at the moment) to be caught by a belt change bill which wipes out any savings?
Mercedes-Benz A-Class - Renault engine! - unthrottled

It's a scheduled expense at (I think) 72,000 miles. So a single belt change is good for 140,000 miles-probably the lifetime of a lot of cars.

The extra cost of a chain engine would be passed on to the customer in one way or another-and if starts rattling, you've got a major unscheduled expense.

Belts/chains each have their own strengths and weaknesses and manufacturers can't quite make their mind up which to use. If one was clearly better then it would dominate the market.

If it's the same as the megane then it's 72000 miles or 6 years whichever is sooner.

NSU tried eccentrics and conrods on its very successful Max, Super Max and SportMax 250cc singles. The design was later adopted for the aircooled 4-cylinder engines in the Prinz cars.

A detailed description is here: over-engineered doesn't even begin to describe it! :-o

NSU also tried the w***el in the Ro80 and then merged with DKW and was renamed Audi.

The cam drive worked reliably, the w***els didn't!

How did we get onto w***els again?!

They have been using a third party diesel for years its in the Smart 4/4 and its sister the Mitsubishi Colt.

Anything, but anything, is better than the boneshaking diesel lump I had in a B200CDI a few years ago. Yes, even a Perkins Prima - just as noisy but without the shudderingly low idle speed that Mercedes said couldn't be adjusted.
