2011 Nissan X Trail Tekna - Nissan HDD system, Sat Nav unfit for purpose - Soft Roader

Copy of an email sent to Citizens Advice following 15 mths trying to resolve an issue with firstly Nissan cusomer services, and then directly with the MD of Nissan GB. I failed with Nissan, and contacted Citizens Advice. They suggested I contact you with a view to 'airing' the issue. It reads as follows, together with a link to a forum which includes other unhappy X Trail owners;

Subject: Failed with trading standards

I sent the following to trading standards, and got a reply to ‘bother’ you. hence the email. I hope you can help.

Hi, I am the owner of a 2011 Nissan X Trail Tekna. I have issues with the Sat Nav (which I had to purchase with the trim), as have several other owners. If you look at the following link to a directly related forum http://www.x-trail-uk.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=3682&p=31532#p31532 the sat nav system, or the maps (or both) are unfit for purpose. I have tried to contact the MD of Nissan GB, but have been fobbed off to his [assistant], who apologises that I am unhappy with the system, and gives a lot of advantages of a central piece of kit, performing many functions, but still does not recognise that the sat nav feature is dire. His response makes interesting reading, as I have an iPhone TomTom app, which updates real time free of charge and tells me exactly where I am. The Nissan version is updated every 3-4yrs (yes every 3-4 yrs), at a cost of £260. I realise that a) I will never buy another Nissan, b) I will have to put up with owning the ‘pup’ of the sat nav they insist you get with the Tekna, but Nissan GB now know there is a problem, and they continue to sell the sat nav in the Tekna spec. Please have a look at he forum, especially as their advert says ‘always know where you are’, and that is a lie. The kit has sent me towing a 24ft caravan over Snowdonia to get to Anglesey, which was scary. I have recorded the other issues in the forum. This ‘pup’ may end up killing someone.

Seems more like a legal question rather than a technical one.

You do not state why you consider the Sat Nav to be unfit for purpose. You also state that it navigated you to Anglsey so from this it must work as a Sat Nav, or did you tell it beforehand that you were towing a large caravan and to stick to main roads.

Your case is with the supplying dealer of the vehicle and you have to convince him that the goods you have purchased are not satisfactory. If you cannot do this then you have to convince a Judge at small claims court of the same.

all the very best

Sat nav is only an aid not to relied on you could always buy a TT and you could have checked it out before you bought it.

Unless you go abroad a lot then any upgrade is irellevant as the UK does not change very much.I have satgnav in my cars came as standard do not find the need to turn them on in the UK I use the TMC service in europe its quite good.I also have a the latest Garmin with upto date maps two sections of two different autobahns are not their as is one complete autobahn so its not only Nissan that have problems. Personally I would forget it and get on with life, its to short to worry about a Sat nav unit.

If you think the nissan satnav is bad try a Garmin.

Are you sure you know how to use it?

I agree with Stef. The system is unfit and unsafe.
I have a 61 Reg Xtrail fitted with the NissanHDD system.
The car curser is always running way behind where the car actually is. The problem was escaleted to Nissan Customer Service Via the Marketing Manager.
To cut a long story short Nissan changed the system for me £8200 plus VAT the dealer told me. Guess what the new one is as bad as the last one.
Nissan now say they are all the same and not a problem as it is only a guidance system!!! Very expensive guidance system.
Still fighting it out but not getting anywhere really.
As to the maps well that's another story.
My advice is if you were thinking of an Xtrail go for the model without this system and buy yourself a decent TT.

I know it's an old thread but just in case anyone stumbles across it and is put off .... current (2012/13) X-Trails have a completely new SD card - based Satnav system and I've found it spot-on so far. It uses Navteq maps like many standalone systems. Updates are still expensive though.

It also has full UK 7-character postcode search which the previous one lacked. Smaller screen than the old DVD-based unit at 5", but it's very clear.

I had the oppurtuniy to use the one as described in the OP and it was absolutely perfect.
