Mondeo 20TDCi - Diesels on the IOW - greenhey

I've been a regular visitor to the Isle of Wight over the years.

.I've frequently noticed how cars with IOW registrations are sold at a premium, and wondered why. With modern cars the type of use on the IOW would be the antithesis of what is best- a lot of short journeys, very little opportunity to use the rev-band

.With the fuss about DPFs, and the general advice that they are best cared -for by a regular use at high revs ( on motorway or similar) I'd have real doubts about buying a diesel on the island, as they have virtually nowhere to give the DPF that use.

I wonder how many IOW drivers know the DPF story

The DPF problem is not born out by the motor trade or the manufacturers there are not thousands of cars being returned to the agents for repair,I am begining to believe this an urban myth your IOW experience tends to bear this out.

People I've known that live on the IOW make regular visits to the mainland (do they still get cheap ferry fares?).

The premium they pay for fuel over there's certainly an incentive.

Yes some do, others don't. With a ferry return likely to be in the £50-80 range, you couldn't get much benefit from filling your car on the mainland to offset the cost.

VW brochures at one time warned against use of diesels on the Channel Islands - probably they thought there were more chances of reaching higher speeds on the IOW.
