Went to my local dealer with my 3 year old car, just mot'd and full service history. they know the car and all about it. you would think i'd get a better deal eh? Not on your nelly. salesman said they would not put it on their forecourt but would trade it out.(trade in price was in line with what i expected) in my opinion car needs valeting and polishing. there are a couple of paint chips,1 on the bonnet and one on the offside front wing, but you have to look for them! didn't say anything but went away and compared the price od the car i wanted and if i drive 30 miles I can get a discount of almost £2700 on the new car i'm looking at. my dealer has lost the sale because he didn't think my car was good enough to put on his forecourt, and assumed that i would accept his offer as i have been a customer paying full price for services for 2 cars in 5 years. My question, Shall i tell him?

Anybody as foolish as he appears to be wouldn't understand what you were telling him .
Any car salesman that had any ability would never be negative about a part exchange car .its the easiest way possible to irritate a potential buyer .
I've often said to a potential buyer who had a 10 year old scrap car .Thats just what I've been looking for ,for a friend of mine .The customer thinks his car will be appreciated ,after all the owner may have loved it for 10 years .
I don't pay any more for his car ,it's all about perception ,and sadly the part exchange still ends up in the local scrap yard .

You say he offered you the price you expected, so what's the issue, please?

As tony g put it, negative about my "pride and joy" which irritated me a bit, and went and thought about it, and found same car lot cheaper elsewhere!

Fair enough.
There are two schools of thought about how to approach a PX valuation:
- as Tony says, to praise it, thus gaining goodwill from the customer &
- to criticise it, thus demonstrating to the customer why you are only offering what you are.
I guess in this case the salesman chose the latter option but handled it badly.
Incidently, you say you got a £2,500 discount at another dealership; I presume the PX price was the same & both cars you considered were brand new ie you are the first registered keeper?

The salesman did not criticise the car, he just said that they would trade it out. Same make as i was buying, mine 3 years old serviced by them, prelude to low offer.this dealership local family owned, other dealership national chain. both cars brand new, me first registered keeper. He made a choice and i have now made a choice! PX exactly the same too.

From reading the various posts I'm still not sure whether you got a better deal at the second dealer than the first .
The only real test is , did you part exchange your car with the second dealer ?
If you did , how much less of your hard earned cash did you have to give the second dealer than the first .

Car at first dealer £12685 px offered £4250 brand new car me ist owner.
Car at 2nd dealer £9999, (bulk purchase national chain,) px offered £4250. have accepted 2nd dealers offer. both got 5 years manufacturers warranty. both cars same spec!
