Anybody know how to fix the radio display,as it is unreadable and starting to annoy me, or any way of turning it off, i think i'd rather have it completly blank

Either the backlight illumination has failed, or the LCD panel has broken. Whichever it is, you'll need to strip part of the dash to do it - which is basically the panel from the drivers side air vent to the 2 air vents in the middle of the dash. I haven't yet had the pleasure? of changing or replacing the bulbs on a Vectra (yet) If you want to turn off the display, then it's probably a simple case of disconnecting the wires to it, once you've stripped the dash to get to it of course.

I know you don't need to actually remove the instrument panel from it's connecting plugs to get to the centre display, but if you decide to whilst you're in there, disconnect the battery before removing your instrument panel as otherwise the airbag light will illuminate when it all gets reconnected, necessitating a journey to the dealers to get it reset. (from bitter experience)
As Dave says, you can disable the radio display by pulling the plug (the one that isn't one of the standard ISO fittings) from the back of the radio (it will still show temp and time/date though) - but I'd just give replacing the bulbs a go, personally.

Thanks for the warning about the airbag dash light. Do you know offhand how to disconnect the battery without setting off the alarm. I know it is in the handbook, but I am not sure where the handbook is!
Thanks again

Hi Vern,
Sorry, my Vectra doesn't have the alarm - but I thought I'd have a read through both the owners and Haynes manual to see if I could help you. I can't seem to find anything about putting the alarm into a "service mode", or such like.
It does, however, in both manuals indicate that if the remote can't disable the alarm, then unlocking the car with key and turning on the ignition will disarm the alarm.
From this, I would conclude that providing that the alarm has been disarmed either from keyfob (unlock) or key (ignition), you're safe to disconnect the battery. Haynes only caution for each battery disconnection is to ensure that you have the radio code if you still have the OE radio.
But that is just a guess - I can't even check this on my own car, and personally, I'd have expected to have found a place to stick the key in under the bonnet which would have done the job.
I'm sure someone in the know will be along soon to confirm (or not!) what I've just said

Vern,
I'll try and remember to look in my handbook later today. From memory though I seem to recall its something like having to disconnect the car battery within 10 seconds of the ignition being turned off and the key removed from the lock. Will confirm when I remember to look in the handbook though.

I would also be very interested in knowing what type of bulbs are used to light the dash, as one of mine has gone and by the sound of it I do not want to remove the dash more than once, so I would like to ensure that I can get the led equivalent which will have a much longer life than a bulb, and replace both the broken and the still working bulb with the led's!!
It's times like this I miss my old MKII Golf... so easy to work on, even replacing the headlight bulbs on the Vectra is a nightmare!!

I have had my Vectra since new in Jan 1997, originally as a company car. My radio/time/temp display started missing pixels and therefore displying garbage about a month after I purchased it from my employer :-( and realising that it was likely to be expensive to get repaired, I have 'lived with it' for the past 4 years ! Also, the backlight for the odometer failed about 3 years ago, and knowing what an expensive game that is likely to be, I have again 'lived with it'. My colleague also has a Vectra, and he paid for the privilige of getting his odometer backlight bulb replaced. 60p for the bulb, but £120 labour charge from a Vauxhall main dealer ! Evidently, it requires removal of the dashboard, just to change a bulb. Poor design, or what.

The breakdown of the Triple Information Display is usually due to the failure of the internal "film" cable. This can be replaced with conventional cables if you're good with a needle nosed soldering iron and at drilling printed circuit boards. Replacements are available from Dixons Vauxhall Spares at a large saving on Vauxhall retail prices. If you change the TID and have a non original radio you will not be able to reset the date as the required signal is missing, but once set from the original, the radios can be swapped back without a problem.
The speedo is lit by two bulbs with integrated holders. These are the larger type, 5W I think. The odometer and TID are lit by 3 of the smaller type, 2W? The removal of the speedo is quite staightforward taking about 25 minutes the first time. It is well covered in the Haynes manual. If you want to change to LEDs have a look at this site.

If you change the TID and have a non original radio you will not be able to reset the date as the required signal is missing,
You should be able to set time/date without original radio RDS signal. Just use the two buttons at the top, also remembering to deactivate the auto time setting function. I can post further info if needed on how to do so.

Vern,
Re: Alarm.
I've looked in the handbook. Turn ignition on/off. Disconnect battery within 15 seconds of doing so.

Sorry to bring this thread back up again (I was searching for something else at the time) However, for those of you who do have dodgy dashbord displays, this site may help you if you can pick up a soldering iron.

I can't remember who originally posted the vectra-sport.com link, but thanks again.
