Just out of curiosity I clicked the ad for the above on the HJ home page. On the link I couldn't find the offer of £13,995 for the car advertised. The link also uses petrol prices of 113p per gallon to calculate fuel costs. It says those are recalculated annually but was fuel really that cheap within a year? On the whole a pretty missleading advert that should not be hosted by HJ surely?

Unfortunately we don't have direct control over the text of adverts: if you click on Adchoices at the bottom right of the link to the Insignia advert, you'll see that it's done through a third party.

We can always vote with our feet and not buy a Vauxhall - something I have successfully managed, with no regrets, for the whole of the 43 years that I've owned cars!

Well you could stop hosting the link.

Petrol hasn't been 113p a galon in living memory? Whatever it is it is wrong! Did you mean /litre?

Vauxhall Insignia Advert on HJ - fredthefifth

Yes of course, my mistake.

"Petrol hasn't been 113p a galon in living memory"

Speak for yourself. Some of us are not yet gaga and can remember when it was (quick calculate).. 12p per gallon.

And no I am not in my seventies either...

What is this archaic and ancient unit of 'gallons'? ;-P

Vauxhall Insignia Advert on HJ - Carole4X4
I can remember when I passed my test in 1985 petrol at our local Esso station was 71p per Gallon ( yes that's per Gallon not per litre) but about 2.5 miles away on the main A19 the Shell petrol was only 69p per gallon. Only problem was it was an 8 mile round trip to go to shell and the amount of drivers who failed to realise it was inefficient to travel that far when they were only putting 3 to 4 gallon in at a time.

Even in 1988 when I had an MG Metro 1300 I could fill the tank for about £8 and run all week back and forth to work, taking my mum to work on a night and then my own 'joyriding' ( I was only 22 at the time).

Happy days when petrol was cheapish and cars were simple but pleasurable.

Haha when I started learning to drive (2007) it was 71p per litre!

Vauxhall Insignia Advert on HJ - jamie745

I remember the first time I noticed a garage selling LPG in 2002 it was 29p a litre.

That's strange, because my first job in 1978 was as a petrol pump attendent in an esso station, I clearly remember the 4* costing 71p a gallon, can't believe it didn't go up in price in the subsequent 7 years. I also remember when decimal currency came in (1971) my dad had to pay 36p a gallon !

I passed my test in 1963, and I seem to recall the first gallon of petrol I bought was 4/6, or 221/2p , what year were you recalling?

The point seems to have been missed that HJ is hosting a link to a dodgy advert!

Vauxhall Insignia Advert on HJ - unthrottled

Is it any worse than the hosted adverts from chipping companies promising 15% greater mpg? I'd eat my non-existent hat if anyone can tweak a proven 15% improvement in efficiency from a remap.

The Advertising Standards Agency deals with complaints on adverts - if the media start being judge/jury then censorship has arrived.

Personally, I ignore all advertising and don't believe a single word of it.

I didn't miss it. Please see my reply to your first post above.

Vauxhall Insignia Advert on HJ - fredthefifth

Avant, I did see your reply and responded. I would expect a responsible site to drop such a link.

Vauxhall Insignia Advert on HJ - unthrottled

Fred, the advert quotes the fuel price as being 112p/litre for petrol and 113p/litre for diesel correct at March '10. Yes, the figures are out of date, but it is a far cry ffrom claiming 113p/gallon.

No, I couldn't find the £13,995 offer, but there was one for £14,600 or so. Adverts are always selective with the truth, who knew?

It's a lot less insidious than cars claiming to be "zero emissions" because they're electric or that they get up to 74mpg-when treally they won't do more than about 50.

Vauxhall Insignia Advert on HJ - Avant

I agree entirely with Unthrottled. Look no further than the sentence on the first screen.

With its groundbreaking design and sophisticated technology, the Vauxhall Insignia redefines the mid-size cars. Available in three attractive body styles, the Vauxhall Insignia invites you to experience superb driving dynamics.

I could challenge every adjective in that. Almost all adverts exaggerate, particularly any that imply that a Vauxhall is desirable.

I might ask, Fred V, are you truly called Fred and the fifth in your family to be so called? I don't think any of us mind if you aren't. :)
