ford focus 99 - starter problems - beaner

i have a ford focus 99 and it wont start i put a new starter in but its still not starting and th insturments are doing a full sweep but they have been doing that for a long time

Doesn't an instrument cluster full sweep indicate low battery charge? in which case an interlock may stop the relay from energising the starter to stop it burning out.

Is there any sound from the starter at all? If not I suspect you have a battery earth problem, check and clean the battery connections and the other end of the negative earth strap where its fitted to the engine/gearbox.

It just clicks but when you bump it it starts then after that it starts first time on the key

I would suggest you need a new battery.

Make sure it's a calcium battery, not a lead acid battery otherwise it'll go cranky again.
