Ford Mondeo 2-litre petrol, '54 reg - Lead/acid, calcium or silver battery - bathtub tom

I don't know when Ford started fitting their 'smart' charge system. I know that lead/acid isn't advisable with it, but how do I tell if 'smart' charge. The handbook doesn't help.

Unfortunately it's not my car and the owner's had the battery replaced. It just rang alarm bells for me.

My 1999 Focus used the smart charge system and required a calcium battery so I'd be surprised if your 54 Mondeo wasn't the same but, as Peter says, checking the OEM battery will be a good place to start.

'Silver' batteries are calcium batteries enhanced with silver AFAIK. Bosch have a compatibilty chart on their website for their calcium/silver batteries.
