Albany Car Hire - AnneJ

My son was recently involved in a non fault accident and was offered a hire car from Albany Assistance Ltd. Prior to delivery of the vehicle, a male representative from the company telephoned and told me we had to ensure we returned the hire car with the same amount of petrol in it (ie £15) and that there was a fuel surcharge of £15 but I understood this was in case we returned the vehicle empty. Prior to the pickup we put £15 of fuel in the tank as requested and the driver who collected the hire car checked the gauge and stated this was fine. A couple of weeks later my son received a final demand from Albany (this was the first one we had received) demanding payment of the fuel surcharge. I explained to the female representative we had filled up the car as requested but she said we should have returned it empty. Is Albany trying to have 2 bites of the fuel cherry or should we just pay up and hope never to do business with them again?

>>she said we should have returned it empty

So you returned it with more fuel in it than they wanted, and they're trying to charge you for it?

Tell them to drop a lighted match in the tank, that'll resolve the problem.

I work for albany... the £15 fuel SERVICE CHARGE is for also delivery and pick up of the vehicle... the fleet team agree a level with you to set it at for when they collect it. that £15 is not for fuel only... & also... that is the ONLY complusary charge... i bet your son paid no excess and i bet it doesnt affect his insurance or no claims... AND we kept your son on the roads with a replacement vehicle & your complaining about £15?? aplogies for the mix up youve had but you've had more benefits from our company that what you would of had from anywhere else.... your own insurance would have made you pay the excess even tho its a non fault accident.. and then wait months to claim it back.. where as all you paid compulsary to us a small £15???

A small charge for delivery seems fair enough. Just make that clear to your customers and then you are less likely to get complaints. Communication is the key.

So why is the £15 charged to the person using the hire car and not simply added to the cost of the hire car and reclaimed from the other party's insurers?

Because like most companies involved in this end of the insurance trade they want to baffle the normal customer and then rip them off,you only have to read the the reply from Albany to realise that.

Best left alone there are still a few honest companies about.
