Citroen C5 HDI 110 - Hot starting problems - BrummyC5

Hi

My C5 110 HDi has started showing a reluctance to start when the engine is hot. Once it cools down a little it starts with a lot of turning over.

It runs OK and seems to have plenty of power on the motorway.

It was serviced about 8 weeks ago but has had a few weeks sitting as I was away

Any ideas?

I would suspect low rail pressure or a faulty sensor.

hi ,thanks for your advice .could it be the high presure pump or what sensor do you think it maybe .? thanks ray .

There is a pressure sensor on the pump, these can go faulty but so can the pumps, you may find one of either at a reasonable price on ebay.

It could also be that the engine is not turning over fast enough if the pump is borderline, how old is your battery?

the battery is brand new, if i disconnect the tempreture switch turn ignition of and then turn it over it will start ,i put the temp back on and it will drive ok .

Sounds odd, I think you need a fault code reader on it.

hi ,there are no error codes stored .i am going to replace the high pressure pump ,are they all the same mine is a bosch .ray

I have heard of an injector problem causing this but not necessaraly on this car. When they get hot the leak off on one can increase to the point that it lowers the rail pressure beyond the starting point. If you disconnect the leak off pipes and run them into four recepticles you can watch the leak off rate, run it until it gets hot and see if one is leaking more than the others.

This problem was caused by the starting motor not turning over fast enough. It sounded OK to me but the RAC and other mechanics told me it was slow. The RAC man put a booster on the battery and reckoned that with the amount of current that it was drawing the motor should have been flying. I took out the starter motor and took it to an auto electric specialist. The gearing system was the problem and not repairable. The windings were OK. I bought a replacement off the shelf and fitted it myself. That particular problem was sorted in about an hour and a half altogether.

When starting now I disengage the clutch to try and reduce the load on the starter motor.
