Mk4 Golf 1.4 petrol - Engine smoking - oil additive ? - golf-driver

I have a Mk4 Golf 1.4 petrol engine thats done 127k.

The exhaust is emitting white smoke which gets worse the more you rev the engine.

The MOT centre was unable to peform the emissions test due to this.

Oil consumption is about 1200 miles for every litre of oil.

Is there any additive I can put int oil to stop this?

Is this soley due to engine wear or could it be something else? The engine rear breather pipe is clear.

I had a new thermostat installed as the previous one was staying open and since then there has been more smoke.

White smoke sounds like steam. Is the radiator level constant?

Agreed, new thermostat increased the white smoke.

The coolant level is stationary there is no oil in the coolant. The garage mechanics said the smoke is due to oil .

Blue smoke is normally oil smoke.

Does the smoke smeel like oil?

Burning oil is usually blue smoke.

Of course, you may have broken piston rings injecting neat oil into the exhaust - that would give LOTS of white smoke... (been there).

Sounds like H/G failure I'm afraid. Depending on where it's gone-it could explain the heavy oil consumption.

its an old engine and done high mileage and things go wrong.

Have it checked for the head gasket leaking.

Engine rebuild time

A VW garage had a quick check and said the white smoke is most likely HG failure.

The coolant level is actually dropping.

This could take 8 hours labour to fix.

Is there an additive for the coolant that could seal the HG hole?

Read the small print first. IF it works fine, if not ...

Most of the water additive products are snake oil. They have been known to block up water ways and damage water pumps instead of fixing the head gasket. Bars leak works fine (or did) for rad leaks but that is about it.

If you carry on driving you may end up needing to have the head skimmed as well as replacing the gasket, carry on too long and you may need a replacement head.

Get it sorted properly, should give you years of motoring.

8 hours labour is excessive, try elsewhere.
