I read the article “The problem with bigger wheels” on the HJ column in Saturday’s Telegraph. A reader complained that the 17 in wheels on his Mercedes E320 CD1 have increased the emissions and are costing him £35.00 more in road tax than 16 in wheels would.

Can anyone tell me how the wheel diameter affects the CO2 emissions ?

It's the increased width of the larger wheel that increases rolling resistance.

17 inch wheels and tyres may also weigh more. If you look at an Audi brochure it tells you the weight of every option and advises adding extras may mean a tax band change. Important if the basic car is close to the top of the band.

Thank you, I'm more aware now. The bigger wheels, as well as looking silly, cost a lot more to buy and run.

And give a worse ride on anything other than a race track, and replacement tyres cost more!
