A6/A4 - Audi A6 or A4 Avant - Lord Laughton

Hello again!

The Mrs and I have now discounted the Volvo V50 option based on the apparant limited space available. We both like the look of the last shape (54-08) A4 and larger A6 Avant.

This will be the main family car and as such will be driven by my wife in the main as she is about to go off on maternity leave with our second child. We already have a 16 month old monster and need some carrying space. In the main the car will be used for traveling about town and distances within 15 miles or so plus a weekly round trip of 120 miles or so visitng reletives or day trips on my days off from work. This is the reason I think we would be better off with petrol? I'm thinking of getting the 1.8T A4 or the 2.0 TFSI A6. I can't do without turbos now from driving diesels. We will be looking at a 56/07 plate with high milage, ex fleet car with full Audi service history and timing belt changed ect ect.

Does anyone have any experience of these cars? What are they like to drive, run and live with day to day? Are the diesels a better drive? I cant stretch to the 2.7 or 3.0 models and the 2.0 A6 seems way underpowered......

I have an old golf gtdi 130 going strong for the commute to work so this isnt an issue.

We would welcome any advice, observations re these models. Thanks in advance.

My F-i-L has an A6 Avant, 2.0 TDI. It's a very nice car indeed. I am not allowed to have a go at driving it, but he says it's very reliable (it's at high mileage, bought new) and it's certainly comfortable and quiet from a passenger's perspective. He gets good mpg out of it, but then it's a diesel and he's doing 25k a year in it. It's certainly not underpowered...!

If a Volvo V50 is too small, you'll need to check carefully whether an A4 would be any bigger.

I think the main thing was the petrol engines with this model - the T5 is silly money to insure, the 2.4 looks thirsty and the 2.0 looks like it lacks torque. I like the diesel engines though the d5 is still silly money. Would a diesel be of any use given the predominantly short journeys - particulate filters clogging up ect... I do like the low done torque though.

I dont think the A4 is much if any bigger, but it is a lot better !

The V50 is just an expensive Focus estate. But as someone else has said you could go for an Octavia if you want the quality without the Audi pricetag.

The A4 Avant, lovely car though it is, is no more roomy than a V50. If you need the space, go for a Skoda Octavia estate - you'll get a newer one for your money - probably with the 1.8T petrol engine, which has plenty of torque.

Im waiting for Avant to make a vehicle recommendation post which dont feature the words 'Octavia' or 'Skoda'.

:P

Isnt the Ford Mondeo estate pretty sizeable?

Very useful Bobbin - thanks.

The Mondeo is a very good far but Fords don't hold their value well so are best bought secondhand. Each new model is bigger than the last and the current Mondeo has as much room as a Superb or Mercedes E-class, more I think than a A6.

From what I read, the reason for Fords' heavy depreciation has been over-supply: but it can't just be that because the BMW 3-series sells better in the UK than the Mondeo, but still holds its value better. Perceived quality maybe, although Ford might reasonably quarrel with that.

Make sure your read the "whats bad" part of the car by car reviews from this website. 2.0 Diesels are a liability.

Avant, I'm not having a go at you, but everybody seems to compare the BMW 3 Series with the Mondeo. The Mondeo is much more BMW 5 series size than 3 series.

A6/A4 - Audi A6 or A4 Avant - Avant

You're right of course, 475,and no doubt more Mondeos are sold than 5-series.

I think the comparison happens because company reps make do with Focuses and their managers choose BMW 3s whereas a generation ago both would have had a Cortina / Sierra, in different engine sizes and trim levels of course. Fewer children and holidays abroad with a taxi to the airport mean that they don't need all that space.

Yes thats true, I know someone who had a BLB engined A4 2.0 TDI and had the old cam chain disaster. My BRE engined 2.0 TDI was 100% fault free till I sold it at 65K. So anything after 2006 should be okay. Regarding the injector issue I understood that it was only the 170BHP engine that was affected.

Interesting so far. Anyone actually own an A6 or A4 and wish to share their experiences?

I like the Skoda, the Mrs doesnt, Mondeo a bit too big and to be honest we like German our current 320d e91 hasnt missed a beat just not big enough, rear wheel drive oh and notchy gear box - hence why it will be leaving us shortly. The golf well ....10 years old so far bullet proof thanks to 10,000 mile services and pulls like a train, still almost as quick as my previous astra 1.9 150 cdti.

Now folks, Audi' Estates. Petrol. Opinions please.

You may have a problem - size/space is a requirement but a good suggestion is too big.

You need to define your requirements in more definite terms.

Sorry if I have confussed the issue, I am after peoples first hand opinions / experiences of either the Audi A4 Avant or the Audi A6 Avant in petrol engine form.

I have driven an 2006 A6 Avant for 100k - no issues at all and no plans to let it go...

Mine is 2.7TDI manual S Line- no timing belt, none (I hope) of the reliability issues of the 2.0TDI - regular 40-42 mpg in everyday use, no significant mechanical issues. Feels and looks very close to the day I picked it up with 4k on it.

I did try to buy an A4 avant at the time, but the quality seemed poor by comparison, and the prices very close for an ex demo with same spec/ same engine. The A4 reminded me of a golf and was comparably unrefined, the A6 reminded me of a A8... best car I have ever had. I recently checked out the new A6 and couldnt convince myself I preferred it to mine, so I kept my £25k in my pocket!
