When the car is cold in pretty much kangaroos its way down the road and when it does stutter it pours blue smoke.

It disapears when it warms up

The battery test has been fine and glow plugs replaced.

I was wondering if there was a cold start mechanism on the fuel pump?

Any advise appreciated

thanks

Its misfiring on one or more cylinders, the first port of call would normally be the glow plugs but as you have changed them obviously not, assuming the 12 volt supply to them is good you must have low compression, this could be caused by incorrect valve clearances or bore/piston wear. If it runs OK when its warm and starts well I wouldn't worry about it.

Hi thanks for the reply,

It does have 145,000miles on so bore/piston wear is quite possible. It does start well so failing sticking in a lower millage engine rather than a top emd rebuilb I might just atick with it

This could be a side effect of what used to be a very common problem with the pug 1.5 D. The vlave clearances are set/fixed by shims (not hydraulic) and sometimes the valve clearances eventually become too tight due to valve seat recession - The result is some valves me be left slightly open when cold but fine when warm due to metal expansion.

This can cause all sorts of starting and/OR running problems when started for the first time in the day due to the reduced compression. If I remember rightly it is fairly easily fixed.

Thanks big John, is this a job for the home mechanic is it a case of taking the rocker cover off and checking with a shim?

Cheers

If you take the rocker cover off I believe you can easily check with feeler gauges(when cold!). I’ll bet you haven’t got any clearance at all on some of them!

Probably best to invest in a Haynes manual which will list valve clearances and also show you how to remove/replace shims where required. As far as I can remember the cam doesn't need to be removed to do this.

The shims are usually stamped with their thicknesses but the markings can wear off so you may need a micrometer.

If you don't have any clearance on some valves best to get it sorted otherwise it may get much worse.

Hi thanks for all the replies. 1 important point that I forgot to mention is that the fuel ecomony is very poor on this car. It gets around 300 miles out of a 45 litre tank. I was wondering if this ties in with valve clearences or could this be something else?

Cheers

I suspect the engine is clapped out...
