Hello chaps, after watching from afar for some time, I thought I'd like to join in. Please excuse my so so spelling and terrible grammar- I obviously wasn't listening that day at school.

I tend to agree with your general scepticism about modern diesels, if the all round cost is taken into account, I'm not sure they're any cheaper to run than a petrol equivalent, people need to look beyond the mpg figure and maybe include the potential dpf,dmf or turbo replacement cost, just to give themselves a few sleepless nights.

The recent post by sirionman was very interesting, I must agree with him that owning an asian car is in my opinion a good choice. I've owned many european cars with so called character, but now drive a Nissan tino, unpopular and ugly, but surprisingly good. My previous VW's Renaults and Fiats had far more niggles and problems, whereas the Nissan just seems bullet proof, It'll be another Japanese car for me next time.

Nice to meet you all, as it were.

Oli, not oily.

Welcome Oli Rag,

I drive an old unpopular Honda, so we are in a club. A fan-of-Japanese-petrols club.

Watch out for current Nissans - after your Tino they formed an alliance with Renault and their cars are not as quite as well built and "boringly" bombproof as their 80's and 90's models. I'm sad about this because my Dad had lots of old-skool Nissans when I was growing up and they were all rocklike.

Enjoy posting. There are a lot of very knowledgeable people on here.

Welcome to the forum. Contributions gladly received!

We're not too fussy about spelling, grammar, typos etc. As a moderator, the things that bring out my virtual blue pencil are personal insults (which sometimes happen when an argument gets heated, but shouldn't) and unhelpfulness to a poster asking for advice. Otherwise we're pretty easy-going.

You express very well why many people buy Japanese cars: everyone has their own priorities, particularly if they feel that their car is an extension of their personality (perhaps more than any other asset) - but reliability is going to be near the top of most people's lists.

Welcome aboard.

I too am unconvinced by most modern diesels and would be more tempted by an older, big engined, LPG converted car.

Sometimes reliability reputations preceed the car itself. I've had Fords, Peugeots and a Jaguar and none of them have left me stranded anywhere.

HELLO welcome to the group. .

i'm yet another Jap , petrol car owner, 2008 mitsubishi Lancer 1.8

I drive approx 16k per year, but still figure the cheaper purchasing price of the car +, 9p cheaper per litre at the pumps and cheaper servicing means no huge savings from running a diesel. plus average 37mpg and group 8 insurance suits me....

Paul.

some have listed previous cars,,,,hmmm my list....metro, mk2 escort, mk3 escort, 205, 306, mk6 escort, mk3 astra, Fiesta RS, mk2 Golf, MK2 polo, mk1 MR2, Volvo v40, impreza (bug eye)., Lancer GS3..

Welcome oil rag. i'm on the other side of the world and drive European. I know Japanese cars are reliable but my old Mercr clk 320 has carted me to work and on trips for years and at 11 years old and 135k looks good. Each to their own!

I have a Jap petrol car - and do around 25k miles year

I should really have a diesel, but reliability is my main priority (doesnt help that the mainstream Jap companies dont make decent diesels)

I am a recent convert to Japanese; I've always bought sub £1000 cars over the last 25 odd years of driving and mostly been blessed with good service. My current 1996 1.3 Corolla was bougth as a stop gap after my Puma (great car!) was tail ended and written off. I hated the Corolla at first, as after the Puma it was (and is) a very bland drive BUT it starst first time every time, sailed through its last MOT and has never in 14 months given a hint that it might go amiss. All electrics work perfectly, I'm very impressed with the general build quality (way ahead of the Puma) and generally better than the Skoda Felicia which preceded the Puma.
