Peugeot 106 - New Head Gasket - won't start - simonmango

I've just replaced the head gasket on my bog standard V reg (99/2000) Pug 106 1124 with Bosch MA3.1 Engine Management System.

After putting it all back together (except for the timing belt cover) the engine warning light comes lights up on the dash. The engine barely turns over (about half a turn) and smoke starts coming out of the wiring loom where the wires split off to connect to the thottle body.

The fuel pumps primes okay. But there is no attempt of ignition when fully turning the key to start it.

Before I tried to start it up I checked that it turned by hand and all was fine - so it's not the problem. I've gone back over it all and re-checked all connect iona that I disturbed - and still the same.

It was working fine before hand - never had a problem starting it in 11 years. Changed head gasket because it was starting to leak oil badly along front edge.

Any one got any ideas?

Thanks.

Hi all,
If any one is interested, I finally figured it out... disconnected the 2 wires from the negative terminal on the battery and noticed that one connector was a bit oily and very rusty and the other connector was slightly damaged - I think a mechanic must have cut it and twisted the connector to get it back on the terminal.

Anyway, straightened them out, rubbed them down, cleaned them up and re-connected them - nice and tight this time - and hey presto... it's purring like a kitten in front of a warm fire. What a relief!

Make sure that the earth connection form the battery negative is securely connected to the engine/gearbox.
