Ford Focus - international warranty - herzchen

>In June 2007 I Purchased a Ford Focus 1.6 Diesel CVT Automatic from Ford Cyprus with a 5 Year Mechanical warranty (see Ford Cyprus/Warranty web site) Now 4 1/2 years and 5700kilometers later, I am experiencing Gear Box bearing noise, and have been told that the bearings are on their way out and it will probably be a new gear box at the cost of £3600.

I approached my local Ford main dealer as to regards a warranty claim and was told no-way Ford don’t do 5 Year Warranties and they referred me to Ford Customer Relations who would look into the matter. Customer Relations came back saying that they could not find any thing on their Data Base relating to a 5 Year Warranty for my car, so therefore couldn’t help. They suggested that this must be a local dealers warranty applicable only to Cyprus, and my redress should be to Ford Cyprus. Somehow I get the impression that they are passing the “buck” and dodging the issue.

I have emailed Ford Cyprus and I still awaiting a reply, but I don’t hold much hope. (Like all Cypriots they are inclined to burry their heads in the sand and hope the matter will go away).

As I have the extended Ford warranty Terms & conditions stapled into my Service Portfolio the only problem its in Greek, (I am trying to obtain a translation) and from what little Greek I understand this looks like an official Ford Warranty and the Portfolio states that any Ford Authorised Dealer can carry out repairs.

What I would like to know is there any European Directive/Law, which can be quoted that will make them honour the warranty. (i.e. BER EU Article 81(1) , the Peugeot case of 9/7/2009 case No:T-450/05) or some other.

If however I am on a hiding to nothing then I think is about time Ford put their house in order and did some thing to stop dealers offering outlandish warranties and then sliding out of honouring it through some small print or other.

Ford Focus - international warranty - thunderbird

Had several Ford over the past 12 years, definitely no 5 year warranty. On a UK supplied car the manufacturers warranty is 1 year followed by a 2 year dealer warranty. I bought an import and that came with a 2 year manufacturers warranty which is the norm on EU cars.

I suspect that the car you bought had a unique dealer extension to the manufacturers one year and that the only way you can get the work done FOC is to take it back to the original dealer. If you have not had it serviced by them they will probably point to small print that requires that means the warranty is null and void.

Dealers are hopeless at the best of times!

I remember buying a Ford in the UK with a three year Ford UK warranty and maintenance plan in the mid 90's. Every time I went to a dealer (in the UK) to ask for a service or new tyres / battery / whatever they told be "Ford don't do maintenance plans"... usually followed by a lot of complaining before someone would bother to look at the paperwork and call head office.

However, your contract will be with Ford Cypus, you'll have to start there, and by phone rather than an email.

It's not passing the buck - it's like buying a Sony TV from John Lewis, then going back to Tesco demanding the John Lewis 2 year warranty... These are different companies, and dealers are only franchises, so until Ford Cyprus say they'll pay...

Surely the answer is here -

Your new Ford Focus is covered by a warranty which is provided by the representative who has supplied it to you.

The above warranty applies only if the following steps have been taken:

Ø The vehicle must not have been neglected, subject to misuse, modified in any way or used in racing or rally competitions.

Ø The vehicle must have been serviced at the regular intervals stipulated in the service record.

Ø All servicing of your vehicle must be carried out ONLY in the workshops of Michaels Automotive Ltd., or by their authorised associates.

So unless you had it serviced at Michaels Automotive in Cyprus you haven't got a warranty.
