Mitsubishi Grandis 2.4 petrol CVT - Ceramic brake pads - noisy? - BoDuke

Dear Back Room,

I am thinking about buying a 2nd hand Grandis (2008, 40k miles) which is a 2.4 petrol model with CVT. The car looks tidy all round, but with one exception - the brakes make a grinding noise that is quite noticable, and when braking in reverse they squeal lightly.

The seller said that it wasn't the discs, but that he'd fitted ceramic brakes pads to uprate the brakes and since then they were better (in terms of stopping), but that they now make the grinding noise.

My knowledge of such matters is zero but I suspect that he's not exactly telling the truth and that the discs are scored. Is what he says credible? From a quick search on the internet it seems that ceramic brake pads should be quiter, not noisier.

Is there an easy way to check if the disks are scored? They don't look pitted, but can one tell by running a finger across the surface? Or is it less evident when they become damaged?

And if they are damaged, is it a big job to get them skimmed?

Lots of questions, thanks for any help you might have.

Walk away, someones been messing about with the brakes who doesn't know what they are doing, presumably the fronts only by putting some odd ball trash on the car probably from an online auction site.

The car now has sub standard imbalanced brakes that sound like they are down to the metal, if the brakes are better then it will be overbraked at the front, if they are worse cold or warm (they will be, one or the other) then you might find yourself in the unhappy position fo having the balance biased unduly towards the rear, a bad thing.

If he's ponced about with the brakes, ask yourself why, the answer being he probably drives like a twerp so what else has he modified, the oil the filters?, and what damage has he done by driving hard enough to need boy racer brakes on a people carrier.

This car would have to be seriously cheap to be considerable, factor in probably £500 for new pads and discs (all round) maybe more for genuine parts, and factor in another grand for goodness knows what thrashing damage to emerge, personally i'd walk unless it's two grand under another private sale and 3 grand under a MD sale for the same vehicle.

I'll lay a little side bet with you, if he's renewed the tyres they are cheap ditchfinder junk.

Thank for the advice, it seems like there could be trouble in store. I'm not so sure it's been truly thrashed (I think the CVT limits revs to 5000 rpm even if in manual mode), but it hasn't been through dealer services (seller "doesn't trust" Mitsu dealer as at second service they didn't change an air filter as arranged) which I guess means that it's been taken to a local workshop where perhaps the correct parts weren't fitted. Good point about the oil though, on the other Grandis I've seen the oil filler cap says that 10W30 synthetic must be used, but this car didn't have the original filler cap - who knows what's been put through it in that case, especially if servicing workshop were incompetent enough to fit the wrong brakes.

Read one other report of similar problems on a used Grandis on whatcar.com and the solution there was to replace discs and pads for new as you suggest. Cost was over 700 plus labour. Ouch.

On the side bet, the tyres were replaced 4 months ago (supposedly, I saw more wear than that) for Kuhmo brand.

''I guess means that it's been taken to a local workshop where perhaps the correct parts weren't fitted''.

Or it hasn't been serviced at all, i like Mitsi's and i think they are good cars but servicing and genuine parts have never been cheap, seems odd no MD services at all for such a relatively new car and supposedly low mileage, could there be mini cab use evidence?

Hmm i wouldn't buy them but not ditchfinders.

Will you haggle or walk?

I'll haggle but with the price of new discs and pads, main dealer fitted, in hand. Where I live it's very hilly and I'm not prepared to muck about with any sort of question over the brakes.

Thanks for the advice
