1999 Galaxy V6 (aaa)engine code - misfire - vsick

Hi, newbie here hoping someone can shed some light on an annoying v6 galaxy.

It has a random cylinder misfire on all cylinders, no codes or management light, no water loss or h/gasket issues, has had new c/pack leads and plugs , misfire still there, went away for 3 miles once then returned, runs like a dog, Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi,thanks for replying, genuine leads, NGK plugs and A/M coil pack, yes i did it all myself, i had my own garage for 15 years and im still ok on most things but this has me stumped.

The maf is also new, i struggling now i don,t mind admitting :(

Multiple misfires on these are often caused by air leaks or a maf fault.Is the maf a genuine Vw or original make unit?Also does the engine rattle on start up and idle.?I would suggest do a vacuum gauge check A low reading could indicate a worn timing chain.Not uncommon on these and a massive job.hth

I agree about the timming chain and having done a few on V6's not nice to do !

I would scope the coil pack , but also very wary of aftermarket coils on these !

Have you checked the fuel pressure ?

I've checked the fuel pressure, its ok , not scoped c/p yet, no significant rattle from engine apart from slight tappet noise although when the motor misfires there is a slight rattle from g/end of engine but i put that down to the tickover dropping momentarily , its only done 119000 miles.

Whats really puzzling me is when i put the first set of new A/M leads on it ran ok for 3 miles then slowly developed the misfire back again , at the end of the 6 mile journey it was as bad as before so i bought genuine leads but they have made no difference ?

Just rememnbered that these are best on ford plugs as the NGK are thinner ceramic, this causes the plugs to track down the side.

Make sure the cats are ok. I have also replaced timing chains on these at well under 100.000 !

The reason i kept getting no fault codes was down to a dodgy wire on the d plug.

Now i have only 1 code.....................................................00668

which points to a bad connection on the ecu or a dodgy fuse connector, still looking around the net but it seems a common fault on vw,s and audi,s (surprise surprise)!

Checked fuses 13 and 14 and eveything fine there, so , it boils down to an intermitent voltage supply to ecu ( line 30 B+) which is pin 54 on the ecu (red and yellow wire) this should have a constant 12v feed permanently , this i suspect is not happening ,the feed is permanent at fuse 13 (3 amp fuse) so the fault is in the wire between the fuse and ecu and looking at the way Ford route the wiring im not surprised.!

I've removed the dash clocks and can see the ecu but how the hell does it come out ????

This power supply to pin 54 via fuse 13 is only for kam (keep alive memory )to ecu to that it remembers its running parameters.It does not affect performance of engine or any misfire issues.The code posted previously is a power supply general code ,possibly from the efi relay situated within the fusebox.Access requires removal of fuse/relay box,then it opens up like a clam shell.Removal of engine ecu often requires a dash off job,but I think you may be wasting your time.hth

Thanks for that, the full diagnostic readout said.......Code 00668 intermitent voltage (B*) line 30.

I pressumed if the kam is only getting an intermitent signal or possibly low voltage then the parameters would be everywhere and that would cause the misfire ?

I shall remove the fusebox and check efi relay , do you know which number relay it is please ? I did notice that at some point fuse 26 , 25, 24 (one of them ) had got very hot as there is white powder residue on the fuses and seats and a small part of the plastic carrier under 26 and 25 has melted so i shall look deeper.

As I previously suggested this fault code applies to a line 30 permanent supply voltage which is also present at the fuel pump relay from fuse 14.Fuse 32 supplies the ignition power to the efi relay listed as K4 situated within the fusebox but not visible from outside.Fuses #24,25,26 do not seem to be related to the efi system.hth

Well that was a game and a half !

Changed the brand new coil pack and the problem was cured !

Seems that these £75 coil packs are JUNK, do not buy them , buy only from main dealers , never again will i buy anything like this from auto factors ESPECIALLY those at Sutton.

Glad you got it sorted.This is a typical case of sub standard cheapo parts that can send you round in circles.Remember ,buy cheap,buy twice!
